Michelangelo was born in Caprese, near Florence. In his twenties he carved the Pietà and the statue of David, and he quickly became famous. He saw himself as a sculptor, but a pope asked him to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1508–1512). Later he also painted The Last Judgment on the altar wall. In old age he designed the great dome of St Peter's Basilica. He lived to 88.
