この作品のお話
Storyアダムの創造は、旧約聖書の「創世記」で、神が最初の人間アダムに命をあたえる場面です。ミケランジェロが1508〜1512年にシスティーナ礼拝堂の天井いっぱいに描いた大壁画の一部で、この場面は1511〜1512年ごろに描かれました。天井画には300人以上の人物が登場します。
The Creation of Adam shows a scene from the Book of Genesis: God gives life to Adam, the first man. It is part of the huge ceiling Michelangelo painted in the Sistine Chapel from 1508 to 1512. This scene was painted around 1511–1512. The whole ceiling has more than 300 figures.
左では、まだ力のないアダムが地面に横たわり、だるそうに手をのばしています。右では、天使たちに支えられた神が、勢いよく飛んできて指をさし出します。二人の指は、ほんの少しだけはなれています。この「すき間」に、命が流れこむ瞬間の緊張がつまっています。
On the left, Adam lies on the ground. He has no strength yet and lifts his hand weakly. On the right, God flies in, held up by angels, and reaches out his finger. Their fingers do not quite touch. In that small gap, we feel the moment life is about to pass to Adam.
ミケランジェロは自分を画家ではなく彫刻家だと考えていて、天井画の仕事は最初、気が進まなかったと言われます。それでも、彫刻家らしいたくましい体の表現で、世界でもっとも有名な絵の一つを生み出しました。指と指の場面は、映画のポスターや広告で数えきれないほどまねされています。
Michelangelo saw himself as a sculptor, not a painter. It is said he did not want this job at first. But with the strong bodies of a sculptor, he made one of the most famous paintings in the world. The two fingers have been copied in countless movie posters and ads.

Secrets1990年、アメリカの医師フランク・メッシュバーガーが、神と天使たちをつつむ赤い布の形が人間の脳の断面にそっくりだ、と医学雑誌に発表しました。ミケランジェロは人体の解剖を研究していたので、ありえない話ではない、と話題になりました。
In 1990, the American doctor Frank Meshberger wrote in a medical journal that the red shape around God looks like a human brain. Michelangelo had studied anatomy, so many people found the idea interesting.
「ミケランジェロはあおむけに寝て天井画を描いた」と言われがちですが、実際は自分で考えた足場の上に立ち、首と背中を反らせて描きました。首が痛いとぼやく詩と、その姿のスケッチまで残っています。
People often say Michelangelo painted lying on his back. In fact, he stood on a scaffold he designed and bent his head back. He even wrote a poem complaining about the pain, with a sketch of himself painting.
1980年から1994年にかけて行われたシスティーナ礼拝堂の大修復では、日本テレビが費用を支援し、そのかわりに撮影の権利を得ました。すすやよごれが取りのぞかれ、明るい色がよみがえりました。
From 1980 to 1994, the Sistine Chapel was cleaned and restored. Nippon Television in Japan helped pay for it and got the rights to film and photograph it. Dirt and soot were removed, and bright colours came back.
神の左腕に抱かれるように、一人の女性がアダムの方を見つめています。これは、まだ生まれていないイヴだという説が有力です。神はアダムだけでなく、その先の人類の物語まで見ているのかもしれません。
Under God's left arm, a woman looks toward Adam. Many think she is Eve, who has not yet been created. Maybe God is already thinking about the whole story of humankind.
