The god of wine sways on his feet. A bold statue by Michelangelo at 21.
This statue shows a young man with grapes on his head, holding up a cup. He is Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. Michelangelo made it in 1496–97, in his early twenties. It was his first large marble statue in Rome. It is now in the Bargello Museum in Florence. This image is cut out from an old photograph on a glass lantern slide.
Cardinal Raffaele Riario of Rome ordered the statue, and records show that he paid for it. Later, however, it belonged to the banker Jacopo Galli, who put it in his garden among ancient statues. Some say the cardinal did not like the finished work, but there is no firm record of this. The god sways a little and seems unsteady on his feet, just like a god of wine. Behind him, a satyr, a forest spirit with goat legs, nibbles on grapes.
In 1572, the Medici family bought the statue and brought it to Florence. Showing a god as wobbly and very human, instead of grand and proud, was a bold idea at that time. Soon after, Michelangelo finished the Pietà in Rome and then David in Florence, and he quickly became famous.

Young Michelangelo carved a Sleeping Cupid, and it was sold to Cardinal Riario as an ancient work. The story goes that the cardinal got his money back when he learned the truth, and that this affair led the young sculptor to Rome, though the details are debated. In Rome, he made this Bacchus.
In the 1530s, the Dutch artist Maarten van Heemskerck sketched Galli's garden. In his drawing, Bacchus has no right hand holding the cup. Some people think it was left broken on purpose to make the statue look ancient.
Behind Bacchus, a satyr secretly bites a bunch of grapes beside the animal skin in the god's left hand. It is hard to see from the front, so you notice it only when you walk around the statue. Michelangelo made a statue to enjoy from every side.
This image comes from an old glass lantern slide. Before modern projectors, art teachers at universities shone a strong light through glass slides like this. That way, they could show large pictures of artworks on a screen.
