Horns on his head!? Michelangelo's powerful Moses guards a pope's tomb.
Moses, a hero of the Old Testament, sits holding the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments under his arm. His fingers run through his long beard, and he glares to one side. He looks as if he could stand up at any moment. Michelangelo carved him for the tomb of Pope Julius II. The two women on either side, Rachel and Leah, are also by Michelangelo.
In 1505, Julius II ordered a huge tomb with more than 40 statues from Michelangelo. But the pope then asked him to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and later the pope died, so the plan became smaller again and again. The tomb was finished in 1545, 40 years after the order. Michelangelo is said to have called it “the tragedy of the tomb.”
The tomb was not placed in St. Peter's Basilica but in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. Even so, Moses has attracted countless visitors as one of Michelangelo's greatest works. Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, was fascinated by it, visited it many times and wrote an essay about it.
This is Moses from the Bible. He has a long beard and two small horns. He holds stone tablets with God's rules. Michelangelo made him for a pope's tomb. People say the statue looks alive!

The Bible says that after Moses spoke with God, his face shone with light. But an old Latin translation used a word that can mean “horned.” So in Europe, it became a tradition to show Moses with horns.
A famous legend says the statue looked so alive that Michelangelo hit its knee with a hammer and shouted, “Why don't you speak?” It is a fun story, but no one knows if it really happened.
Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, visited this statue again and again in Rome and wrote an essay called “The Moses of Michelangelo.” He thought it showed Moses holding back his anger after seeing his people worship a golden calf.
In the first plan, Moses was to sit about 3.7 meters above the ground, so people would look up at him. When the plan became smaller, he ended up in the center of the lowest level. Some say his upper body is long because it was designed to be seen from below.
