Story聖母マリアが天使たちに囲まれて雲に乗り、天へと昇っていく場面です。下では十二使徒が手をのばして驚き、上では父なる神が両手を広げてマリアを迎えます。下・中・上の3つの段が、赤い服の色でつながっているのに気づきましたか？ティツィアーノが30歳前後で描いた出世作です。
The Virgin Mary rises to heaven on a cloud, surrounded by angels. Below, the apostles reach up in amazement. Above, God the Father opens his arms to welcome her. Did you notice that the color red links the bottom, middle and top? Titian painted this when he was around 30, and it made him famous.
ヴェネツィアのフラーリ聖堂の主祭壇のために描かれました。高さ約7メートルの巨大な板絵で、何枚ものポプラの板を横につないで作られています。教会の入り口から見ると、途中にある聖歌隊席の仕切りのアーチの中に、ちょうどこの絵がおさまるように計算されています。1518年5月19日、祝日に大勢の人の前でお披露目されました。
It was painted for the high altar of the Frari church in Venice. The huge panel is almost seven meters tall and is made of many poplar planks joined together side by side. From the church entrance, the painting fits neatly inside the arch of the choir screen. It was unveiled in front of a large crowd on a holiday, May 19, 1518.
1817年、絵はヴェネツィアのアカデミア美術館に移され、彫刻家カノーヴァは「世界でいちばん偉大な絵」とたたえました。1919年に元の祭壇へもどされ、今も聖堂の中で見ることができます。2018年からは4年がかりの大がかりな修復が行われ、2022年に、輝きを取りもどした姿がふたたび公開されました。
In 1817, the painting was moved to the Accademia Gallery in Venice, and the sculptor Canova called it the greatest painting in the world. In 1919, it went back to its altar, and you can still see it in the church today. From 2018, a major four-year restoration took place, and in 2022 the painting was shown again, shining like new.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets17世紀の作家リドルフィによると、完成した絵を見た修道士たちは、人物が大きすぎると心配しました。ティツィアーノは「遠くから見るのだから、これでいいのです」と答えたそうです。ただし、この話がどこまで本当かはわかっていません。
According to the 17th-century writer Ridolfi, the friars worried that the figures were too large. Titian answered that they would be seen from far away, so the size was right. But no one knows how true this story is.
聖堂の入り口に立つと、中ほどにある聖歌隊席の仕切りの大理石アーチの向こうに、この絵がぴったりおさまって見えます。建物そのものを額縁のように使う、大胆な計算です。
When you stand at the church entrance, the painting fits perfectly inside the marble arch of the choir screen in the middle of the church. It is a bold plan that uses the building itself as a frame.
1817年から1919年まで、この絵は教会を離れ、アカデミア美術館に展示されていました。1822年の美術館の式典では、彫刻家カノーヴァが「世界でもっとも偉大な絵」とほめたたえています。
From 1817 to 1919, the painting left the church and was shown at the Accademia Gallery. At a ceremony there in 1822, the sculptor Canova praised it as the greatest painting in the world.
2012年の調査で、絵の具がはがれかけていることがわかりました。すぐ後ろにあったパイプオルガンは、演奏のたびに絵をふるわせ、木の部分には虫も入りこんでいました。そこで2018年にオルガンが取り外され、4年がかりの修復が2022年に完了しました。
A study in 2012 found that the paint was starting to flake off. A pipe organ right behind the painting made it shake whenever it was played, and insects were eating its wooden parts. So the organ was removed in 2018, and a four-year restoration was finished in 2022.
