Love at first sight! The god of wine leaps through the air.
This is a scene from Greek myth. Princess Ariadne has been left alone on the beach of Naxos by the hero Theseus. Then Bacchus, the god of wine, comes by with his noisy followers. He falls in love with her at first sight and leaps from his chariot, which is pulled by cheetahs. It is a lively masterpiece by the young Titian.
The painting was ordered by Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara in northern Italy. He wanted to decorate his small private room, the Alabaster Room, with paintings of myths. He had first asked Raphael for a painting of a similar subject, but Raphael died in 1520, so Titian's painting took its place. The blue sky is painted with ultramarine, an expensive color made from the stone lapis lazuli.
In 1598, Ferrara came under the rule of the pope, and the painting was taken to Rome. After several owners, it came to the National Gallery in London in 1826. A major cleaning and restoration in 1967–69 brought back its bright colors. But some critics said it had become too bright, and there was a big debate.
Ariadne is alone on a beach. Then Bacchus, the god of wine, sees her. He falls in love at once! He jumps off his cart. Look at the stars at the top left. They are her crown in the sky.
In the upper left of the sky, stars form a ring. In the myth, Bacchus threw Ariadne's crown into the sky and turned it into stars. This is the constellation Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown, which we can still see today. The painting secretly shows how the story ends.
In the old poem, Bacchus's chariot is pulled by tigers. But here, two cheetahs pull it. Many people think Titian used animals from Duke Alfonso's own private zoo as models.
The man on the right with snakes wrapped around him is said to look like the ancient statue Laocoön, dug up in Rome in 1506. But Laocoön fights the snakes for his life. This man strides along with the snakes wrapped around him and a scowl on his face.
Look closely at the golden vase lying on the ground in the lower left. It has the Latin signature “TICIANVS,” meaning Titian. The vase may be modeled on an ancient piece that Duke Alfonso owned.
