迷路名前も分からないのに、500年見つめられ続ける青年。主役は手袋？Nobody knows his name, yet people have admired him for 500 years. Could the glove be the real star?
美術館アンテナ：ティツィアーノ・ヴェチェッリオの作品に会える展覧会この作品のお話
Story黒い服に白いフリルのえり。少しななめを見つめる若い男性を描いたのは、ヴェネツィアの巨匠ティツィアーノです。1520年ごろ、画家が30代前半だったころの作品で、今はパリのルーヴル美術館にあります。題名のとおり、青年は左手に手袋をはめ、その手でもう片方の手袋をにぎっています。
A young man in black, with a white ruffled collar, looks off to one side. He was painted around 1520 by Titian, the great master of Venice, who was then in his early thirties. The painting now hangs in the Louvre in Paris. As the title says, the young man wears a glove on his left hand, and in that hand he holds the other glove.
モデルがだれなのかは、今も分かっていません。当時、手袋は高価なぜいたく品で、身分の高さを示す持ち物でした。ティツィアーノは背景と服を暗くおさえ、顔とえり、両手にだけ光を当てています。そのため、見る人の目は自然に青年の表情と手の動きへ向かいます。右下の石の台には、画家のサインも書かれています。
No one knows for sure who the young man was. At that time, gloves were expensive luxury goods that showed a person's high rank. Titian kept the background and the clothes dark, and put light only on the face, the collar and the hands. So our eyes go naturally to the young man's face and the movement of his hands. Titian also signed his name on the stone block at the lower right.
この絵はイタリアの名門ゴンザーガ家、イングランド王、フランス王と、名だたる持ち主の手をわたって、今はルーヴル美術館にあります。暗い背景から人物がしずかに浮かび上がる、ティツィアーノの肖像画のスタイルは、のちのルーベンスやヴァン・ダイク、ベラスケスら、多くの画家のお手本になりました。
The painting passed through the hands of famous owners: the Gonzaga family of Italy, a king of England and a king of France. Today it is in the Louvre. Titian's style of portrait, in which a figure quietly appears out of a dark background, became a model for many later painters, such as Rubens, Van Dyck and Velázquez.

A young man is wearing black clothes. He has a glove on one hand. Gloves were very expensive at that time. We do not know his name. Titian wrote his name on a stone in the picture.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets右下の、青年が手をのせている石の台をよく見てください。「TICIANVS F.」というラテン語の文字がうっすらと見えます。ティツィアーノの名前です。暗い画面にとけこんでいるので、美術館でも気づかずに通りすぎる人が多い小さなサインです。
Look closely at the stone block under his hand at the lower right. You can just see the Latin words 'TICIANVS F.'. It is Titian's name. The letters melt into the dark picture, so many visitors walk past without noticing this small signature.
この絵はイングランド王チャールズ1世のコレクションにありました。1649年に王が処刑されると、王の美術品はつぎつぎ売りに出されます。絵は銀行家ジャバックの手にわたり、1671年にフランス王ルイ14世が買い取りました。
This painting was once in the collection of King Charles I of England. After the king was executed in 1649, his works of art were sold one after another. The banker Everhard Jabach got this picture, and in 1671 King Louis XIV of France bought it.
これほど有名な肖像画なのに、モデルがだれかは分かっていません。胸のくさりに下がるペンダントは手がかりになりそうですが、決め手にはなりません。研究者がいくつかの名前をあげていますが、どれも「説」のままです。
The portrait is very famous, but no one knows who the sitter was. The pendant on the chain at his chest looks like a clue, but it proves nothing. Scholars have suggested several names, but they are all still only theories.
ティツィアーノは晩年、スペイン王フェリペ2世への手紙に、自分は95歳だと書いています。けれど多くの研究者は、実際は10歳以上若かったと考えています。お年寄りだと強調して、王からの支払いをうながしたのでは、という説もあります。
In his old age, Titian wrote to King Philip II of Spain that he was 95. But many scholars think he was really more than ten years younger. Some believe he made himself sound older to get the king to pay him faster.

His right hand is bare. A ring shines on his index finger.
4画家のサインThe painter's signature
石の台に、うすく「TICIANVS F.」の文字。ティツィアーノのサインです。
On the stone block, you can faintly read 'TICIANVS F.'. It is Titian's signature.
