Story絵は上下2つの場面に分かれています。上では、山の上でイエスがまばゆい光に包まれて宙に浮かび、預言者モーセとエリヤが両側に現れています。その光に、弟子たちは目を開けていられません。下では、悪霊に取りつかれた少年が連れてこられ、残された弟子たちはどうしてよいかわからず、大さわぎになっています。
The painting is divided into two scenes. At the top, on a mountain, Jesus floats in a blinding light, and the prophets Moses and Elijah appear beside him. His followers cannot keep their eyes open. At the bottom, a boy troubled by an evil spirit is brought forward. The other followers do not know what to do, and everyone is in an uproar.
注文したのは、メディチ家のジュリオ枢機卿（のちの教皇クレメンス7世）。フランスのナルボンヌ大聖堂のための祭壇画でした。同じ大聖堂のために、画家セバスティアーノ・デル・ピオンボにも「ラザロの復活」が注文され、ミケランジェロがその下絵を助けました。ラファエロとミケランジェロの、絵による対決でもあったのです。
The painting was ordered by Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, later Pope Clement VII, for Narbonne Cathedral in France. For the same cathedral, he also ordered The Raising of Lazarus from the painter Sebastiano del Piombo, and Michelangelo helped Sebastiano with drawings. So it was also a contest between Raphael and Michelangelo.
1520年4月6日、ラファエロは37歳の若さで亡くなります。亡くなる直前まで手がけていたこの絵は遺体のそばに置かれ、人々の涙をさそいました。結局ナルボンヌには送られず、ローマの教会にかざられます。ナポレオンにパリへ持ち去られたあと、1815年にローマへ返され、今はバチカン美術館にあります。
On April 6, 1520, Raphael died at the young age of 37. The painting he had been working on until shortly before his death was placed beside his body, and people wept. It was never sent to Narbonne and was hung in a church in Rome instead. Napoleon's army took it to Paris, but it was returned to Rome in 1815. Today it is in the Vatican Museums.
これはラファエロ最後の絵です。上では、イエスが明るい光の中にうかんでいます。下では、人々が病気の少年を助けてほしいとこまっています。ラファエロは37歳で亡くなりました。お葬式では、この絵が彼のそばに置かれました。
This was Raphael's last painting. At the top, Jesus floats in a bright light. At the bottom, people need help for a sick boy. Raphael died at 37. People put this painting near him at his funeral.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsラファエロが亡くなった1520年4月6日は、イエスが十字架にかけられた日を記念する「聖金曜日」でした。伝記作家ヴァザーリは、ラファエロが聖金曜日に生まれ、聖金曜日に亡くなったと書いています。37歳の誕生日に亡くなったという説もあります。
Raphael died on April 6, 1520, which was Good Friday, the day that remembers Jesus's death on the cross. The writer Vasari said Raphael was born on a Good Friday and died on one too. Some also say he died on his 37th birthday.
ジュリオ枢機卿は、同じ大聖堂のためにセバスティアーノ・デル・ピオンボにも大作を注文しました。セバスティアーノには、ラファエロのライバルだったミケランジェロが下絵を提供して後押しします。ラファエロの死後、2枚はバチカンで並べて公開されました。
Cardinal Giulio also ordered a large painting from Sebastiano del Piombo for the same cathedral. Michelangelo, Raphael's rival, supported Sebastiano with drawings. After Raphael's death, the two paintings were shown side by side in the Vatican.
はじめは上の「変容」の場面だけの予定だったとも言われます。ライバルの絵が進んでいると知ったラファエロが、下の少年の場面と19人もの人物を加え、より劇的な絵にしたという話が伝わっています。
Some say the plan was first only the upper scene. The story goes that when Raphael learned his rival's painting was going well, he added the lower scene with the boy and nineteen more figures to make it more dramatic.
1797年、イタリアに攻めこんだナポレオン軍はこの絵をパリへ運び、ルーヴル美術館にかざりました。ナポレオンが敗れたあとの1815年、ほかの多くの名画とともにローマへ返されます。サン・ピエトロ大聖堂には、この絵をもとにしたモザイク画もあります。
In 1797, Napoleon's army invaded Italy and took this painting to the Louvre in Paris. After Napoleon was defeated, it went back to Rome in 1815 with many other masterpieces. St. Peter's Basilica also has a mosaic copy of it.
