Story左右に開いた緑のカーテンの向こうから、幼いイエスを抱いた聖母マリアが雲の上を歩いてきます。左でひざまずくのは聖シクストゥス、右は聖バルバラ。ラファエロが教皇ユリウス2世の注文で、北イタリアのピアチェンツァにあるサン・シスト修道院の教会のために描いた祭壇画です。
Green curtains open, and the Virgin Mary walks toward us on the clouds, holding the baby Jesus. Saint Sixtus kneels on the left, and Saint Barbara kneels on the right. Raphael painted this altarpiece for the monastery church of San Sisto in Piacenza, northern Italy. It was ordered by Pope Julius II.
「システィーナ」という名前は、教会の守り神である聖シクストゥス（イタリア語でシスト）から来ています。カーテンは舞台の幕のようで、見る人はまるで奇跡の瞬間に立ち会っているように感じます。シクストゥスは片手でこちら側を指し、聖バルバラは下の天使たちを見おろしています。左下の台には、教皇の冠が置かれています。
The name “Sistine” comes from Saint Sixtus, or Sisto in Italian, the patron saint of the church. The curtains are like a stage curtain, so viewers feel as if they are seeing a miracle. Sixtus points out toward us, and Saint Barbara looks down at the little angels. In the lower left, a pope's crown rests on a ledge.
1754年、ザクセンの君主でポーランド王でもあったアウグスト3世がこの絵を買い取り、ドレスデンへ運びました。第二次世界大戦中はトンネルに隠されて空襲をのがれ、戦後はソ連軍によってモスクワへ。1955年に返還が決まり、ドレスデンにもどりました。下の2人の天使は、いまや切手やカップにまで使われる人気者です。
In 1754, Augustus III, ruler of Saxony and King of Poland, bought the painting and took it to Dresden. During the Second World War, it was hidden in a tunnel and escaped the bombing. After the war, the Soviet army took it to Moscow. In 1955, the Soviets decided to return it, and it came back to Dresden. The two little angels are now so popular that they appear on stamps and cups.

Secrets下の2人の小さな天使は、絵全体から見ればほんのわき役です。ところが19世紀ごろから大人気になり、切手やはがき、Tシャツや包み紙にまで使われるようになりました。絵を知らない人でも、この2人だけは見たことがあるかもしれません。
The two little angels at the bottom are only small extras in the picture. But from around the 19th century, they became hugely popular. They appear on stamps, postcards, T-shirts and wrapping paper. Even people who do not know the painting may know these two.

Look closely at the pale sky behind Mary. It is full of faint angel faces — too many to count. From far away they look like clouds and light, but up close they are faces, faces, faces. It is a little surprise from Raphael.
第二次世界大戦の終わり、ドレスデンの名画は空襲を避けるため、ザクセン地方の山中のトンネルに隠されていました。それを見つけたソ連軍が、この絵をモスクワへ運びます。返還が決まったのは1955年。ドレスデンの人々は、10年ぶりの再会をよろこびました。
At the end of the Second World War, Dresden's great paintings were hidden in a mountain tunnel to protect them from bombs. The Soviet army found them and took this painting to Moscow. In 1955, the Soviets decided to return it. The people of Dresden welcomed it home after ten years.
ロシアの作家ドストエフスキーはドレスデンでこの絵を見て、「人間の精神のもっとも偉大な表れ」とたたえました。のちに彼の書斎には、この絵の大きな複製がかけられていたと伝えられています。
The Russian writer Dostoevsky saw this painting in Dresden. He called it “the greatest revelation of the human spirit.” It is said that a large copy of it later hung in his study.
