イタリアのウルビーノに、画家の息子として生まれました。ペルジーノのもとで学び、フィレンツェではレオナルドやミケランジェロの作品からも吸収します。25歳ごろローマに呼ばれ、教皇ユリウス2世のためにバチカン宮殿の部屋を「アテネの学堂」などの壁画でかざりました。大きな工房をまとめる人気画家となりましたが、37歳で亡くなり、ローマのパンテオンに葬られました。
Raphael was born in Urbino, Italy. His father was also a painter. He studied with Perugino and learned from the works of Leonardo and Michelangelo in Florence. At about 25, he went to Rome. There he decorated rooms in the Vatican for Pope Julius II, including The School of Athens. He ran a large and busy workshop, but he died at just 37. He is buried in the Pantheon in Rome.
