A portrait of Raphael's friend, sketched by Rembrandt and copied by Rubens.
The sitter is Baldassare Castiglione, a diplomat and writer and a close friend of Raphael. He wears a black hat, gray squirrel fur and a white shirt. His quiet colors and the gentle look in his blue eyes show a refined and intelligent person. The background is plain, so our eyes go straight to his face.
Castiglione wrote The Book of the Courtier, about the ideal courtier, a person who serves at a ruler's court. The book praises sprezzatura, the art of doing difficult things easily, without showing any effort. This portrait is not showy, but it is perfectly balanced. It is like his ideal made into a picture.
In 1639, the painting was sold at an auction in Amsterdam. Rembrandt saw it there and made a sketch. He later used its design in his own self-portraits. Rubens painted a copy, and Matisse copied it too. In 1661, it entered the collection of King Louis XIV, and today it is in the Louvre.

In 1639, this painting was sold at an auction in Amsterdam, and Rembrandt, who was there, made a sketch of it. In a famous self-portrait the next year, he used a similar pose, turned to the side with his arm in front. One masterpiece helped create another.
Castiglione made the word sprezzatura popular. It means doing something hard as if it were nothing. Even today, the word is sometimes used in English to describe effortless style.
Castiglione wrote a poem imagining his wife and young son looking at this portrait to feel better while he was away. The painting may have been like a second self that he left at home with his family.
Some people think the figure of Zoroaster, holding a globe of the stars on the right of Raphael's School of Athens, was modeled on Castiglione. Their friendship may live on in another masterpiece.
