Story真っ暗な背景から、巻き毛の若者がふっとうかび上がり、なぞめいた笑顔でこちらを見ています。右手の人さし指は、まっすぐ天を指しています。描かれているのは洗礼者ヨハネ。キリストが来ることを人々に知らせた聖人です。レオナルドが晩年に描いた作品で、最後の絵ではないかと考えられています。
A young man with curly hair appears out of a dark background and looks at us with a mysterious smile. His right index finger points straight up to heaven. He is John the Baptist, the saint who told people that Christ was coming. Leonardo painted this late in his life, and it may be his last painting.
指で天をさすのは、「自分よりあとに来る、もっと大きな方」を示すしぐさと考えられます。暗やみから光が体をなでるように当たり、輪郭は「スフマート」でけむるようにぼかされています。ふつうヨハネは、荒野で修行するやせた男として描かれますが、ここではやわらかくなぞめいた若者の姿です。
Pointing up is thought to show the one 'who comes after me', who is greater than John. Light touches his body out of the darkness, and the outlines are softly blurred with sfumato. John is usually shown as a thin man living in the wilderness. Here he appears as a gentle-looking, mysterious young man.
レオナルドはこの絵をフランスへ持っていきました。その後、絵はイギリス王チャールズ1世のものになります。王が処刑されたあとコレクションは売りに出され、やがてフランス王ルイ14世のもとへもどりました。フランス革命のころからルーヴル美術館にあります。
Leonardo took this painting to France. Later it belonged to King Charles I of England. After the king was executed, his collection was sold, and the painting returned to France, to King Louis XIV. It has been in the Louvre since the time of the French Revolution.

Secretsこの絵は1508〜19年ごろの作とされ、レオナルドが手がけた最後の絵の1つと考えられています。晩年のレオナルドは、絵よりも研究やノートに多くの時間を使っていました。
This painting is dated to about 1508–19 and is thought to be one of the last paintings Leonardo made. In his later years, he spent more time on research and notebooks than on painting.
レオナルドがフランスへ持ちこんだこの絵は、のちにイギリス王チャールズ1世のコレクションに入りました。王の処刑後に売られ、銀行家などの手をへて、ルイ14世のフランス王室へもどってきたのです。
Leonardo brought this painting to France, and later it joined the collection of King Charles I of England. After the king's execution, it was sold, passed through the hands of a banker and others, and came back to Louis XIV's royal collection.
人さし指を立てて上をさすしぐさは、レオナルドのほかの作品にも出てきます。『最後の晩餐』の使徒トマスや、ロンドンにある聖アンナの下絵の聖アンナも、同じように指を立てています。
The raised index finger appears in Leonardo's other works too. In The Last Supper, the apostle Thomas raises his finger, and so does Saint Anne in Leonardo's large drawing in London.
ヨハネの持ち物は、細い葦（あし）で作った十字架と、毛皮の衣。この絵では、どちらも暗い背景にとけこんで、目をこらさないと見えません。指の上あたりに、細い十字架がかすかに見えます。
John's usual signs are a thin cross made of reeds and a fur garment. Here both melt into the dark background, so you must look hard. A thin cross can be faintly seen above his finger.
