美術館アンテナ：レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチの作品に会える展覧会この作品のお話
Story最後の晩餐は、イエス・キリストが十字架にかけられる前の夜、12人の弟子たちと最後の食事をする場面です。ミラノの君主ルドヴィーコ・スフォルツァの依頼で、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチがサンタ・マリア・デッレ・グラツィエ修道院の食堂の壁に描きました。大きさは縦4.6メートル、横8.8メートルもあります。
The Last Supper shows Jesus's last meal with his twelve disciples, the night before he was put on the cross. Leonardo da Vinci painted it for Ludovico Sforza, the ruler of Milan. It is on a wall of the dining hall of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It is 4.6 meters tall and 8.8 meters wide.
描かれているのは、イエスが「あなたたちのうちの一人が、わたしを裏切る」と言った直後の瞬間です。弟子たちは3人ずつのグループになって、おどろき、うたがい、問いかけています。裏切り者のユダは、お金の入った袋をにぎり、身を引いて暗い顔をしています。
It shows the moment right after Jesus says, 'One of you will betray me.' The disciples react in groups of three. They are shocked, doubtful and full of questions. Judas, the traitor, holds a bag of money. He leans back, and his face is in shadow.
レオナルドはゆっくり考えながら描きたかったため、早く描かなければならないフレスコを使いませんでした。その結果、絵は早くからいたんでしまいました。それでも、人の心の動きを手のしぐさで伝えるこの絵は、ルネサンスの最高傑作の一つとされ、今は予約制・少人数で見学します。
Leonardo wanted to paint slowly and think. So he did not use fresco, which must be painted quickly. Because of this, the painting started to fall apart early. Still, it shows feelings through hands and gestures, and it is one of the greatest works of the Renaissance. Today visitors must book, and only small groups can enter.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets1652年、修道院の人々は食堂の壁にドアをつけるため、絵の下のまん中を切り取ってしまいました。そのため、テーブルの下にあったイエスの足の部分が失われています。絵の下のアーチ形の部分がそのあとです。
In 1652, the monks cut a door into the wall under the painting. Jesus's feet, under the table, were lost. The arch shape at the bottom center is where the door was.
1943年、第二次世界大戦中の空襲で、食堂の屋根や壁は大きくこわれました。ところが、絵のある壁は砂袋などで守られていたおかげで、奇跡的に残りました。しばらくは屋根のない状態で、雨風にさらされていたこともあります。
In 1943, during World War II, bombs badly damaged the dining hall. But the wall with the painting was protected by sandbags, and it survived like a miracle. For a while, it even stood without a roof.
部屋の天井や壁の線をのばすと、すべてイエスの右のこめかみの一点に集まります。修復のとき、ちょうどそこにくぎの穴が見つかりました。レオナルドはくぎにひもを結び、遠近法の線を引いたと考えられています。
If you follow the lines of the ceiling and walls, they all meet at one point near Jesus's right temple. Restorers found a nail hole there. Leonardo probably tied strings to a nail to draw his perspective lines.
レオナルドはフレスコではなく、乾いた壁に描く実験的な方法を選んだため、絵は描き終えて数十年でいたみ始めました。1978年から1999年まで、21年かけて大修復が行われ、あとから描き足された絵の具が取りのぞかれました。
Leonardo did not use fresco. He tried a new way of painting on a dry wall. So the paint began to flake within decades. A great restoration took 21 years, from 1978 to 1999. Later paint added by others was removed.
