迷路同じ絵が2枚ある！？レオナルドの「まちがい探し」名画。There are two of them!? Leonardo's famous “spot the difference” painting.

In a dark cave surrounded by rocks, the Virgin Mary gently holds the baby John the Baptist with one hand, on the left. She holds her other hand over the baby Jesus, at the lower right. An angel in red points at John and looks out at us. Leonardo da Vinci painted this in Milan, and it is one of the treasures of the Louvre.
1483年、ミラノの「無原罪の御宿り信心会」が、教会の祭壇画としてレオナルドたちに注文しました。レオナルドは、輪郭を煙のようにぼかす「スフマート」という技法で、やわらかな光と影を描いています。岩の形や足もとの草花は、自然をよく観察して細かく描かれています。科学者としての目が生きています。
In 1483, a religious group in Milan, the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, ordered an altarpiece from Leonardo and his partners. Leonardo used sfumato, a way of softening outlines like smoke, to paint gentle light and shadow. The rocks and the plants at their feet are painted in careful detail from close study of nature. We can see his eye as a scientist.
ところが、代金をめぐって注文主ともめ、争いは何年も続きました。多くの研究者は、この1枚目が別の持ち主の手に渡ってやがてフランス王家のものになり、教会には代わりにもう1枚が納められたと考えています。それが今ロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーにある2枚目です。2枚を比べる「まちがい探し」は、美術ファンの楽しみです。
But Leonardo and the group argued about the payment for many years. Many scholars think this first version went to another owner and later to the French kings, and that a second version took its place in the church. That one is now in the National Gallery in London. Comparing the two, like a spot-the-difference game, is a favorite pastime of art lovers.

Secrets「岩窟の聖母」は、パリのルーヴル美術館とロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーに1枚ずつあります。研究者の多くは、ルーヴル版のほうが先に描かれたと考えています。ロンドン版は、レオナルドが仲間の画家たちと一緒に仕上げたとされます。
There is one Virgin of the Rocks in the Louvre in Paris and one in the National Gallery in London. Most experts think the Louvre version was painted first. The London version is believed to have been finished by Leonardo with help from other painters.
ルーヴル版では、天使がヨハネを指さして、こちらを見ています。ロンドン版では指さしがなく、天使は下を向いています。ロンドン版には人物の頭の上に光の輪があり、ヨハネが十字の形の杖を持っていますが、ルーヴル版にはどちらもありません。
In the Louvre version, the angel points at John and looks at us. In the London version, there is no pointing, and the angel looks down. The London version also has halos over the heads, and John holds a cross-shaped staff. The Louvre version has neither.
1483年の契約で、代金は合計800リラと決められました。ところがレオナルドたちは、のちに1200リラの追加を求め、注文主は100リラしか出さないと答えます。争いはミラノの君主まで巻きこみ、作品が教会に納められたのは1508年のことでした。
The 1483 contract set the total price at 800 lire. Later, Leonardo and his partners asked for 1,200 lire more, but the group offered only 100. The argument even reached the ruler of Milan. The altarpiece was not installed in the church until 1508.
この絵はもともと木の板に描かれていましたが、1806年、フランスの修復家アカンが、絵の具の層を板からはがし、カンヴァスに移しかえました。絵だけを「お引っ越し」させる、とても大胆な修復技術です。
This painting was first made on a wooden panel. In 1806, the French restorer Hacquin removed the layer of paint from the wood and moved it onto canvas. It was a very daring way to move a picture to a new home.

4岩のすきまの景色A view through the rocks
岩のすきまから、青くかすんだ遠くの山々がのぞきます。ほら穴の暗さとの対比が神秘的です。
Through gaps in the rocks, we can see faraway mountains in a blue haze. The contrast with the dark cave feels mysterious.
