迷路24歳のミケランジェロが、生涯でただ一度だけ名前を彫った像。The only statue Michelangelo ever signed — made when he was just 24.
この作品のお話
Story「ピエタ」はイタリア語で「あわれみ」という意味です。十字架からおろされたイエスを、母マリアがひざに抱いて悲しむ場面を表しています。ミケランジェロがこの像を完成させたのは、わずか24歳のとき。バチカン市国のサン・ピエトロ大聖堂に置かれ、いまも世界中から人々が見に来ます。
“Pietà” means “pity” in Italian. The statue shows Mary holding her son Jesus on her lap after he was taken down from the cross. Michelangelo finished it when he was only 24. It stands in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, and people from all over the world come to see it.
注文したのは、ローマにいたフランス人の枢機卿ジャン・ド・ビレールで、自分のお墓のための像でした。ミケランジェロは大理石の名産地カッラーラまで自分で石を選びに行き、かたい石から、やわらかな布のしわや、力のぬけた体を彫り出しました。大人の男性をひざにのせても自然に見えるよう、マリアの体は大きめに作られています。
It was ordered by a French cardinal in Rome, Jean de Bilhères, for his own tomb. Michelangelo went to Carrara, a town famous for marble, to choose the stone himself. From hard marble, he carved soft folds of cloth and a body with no strength left in it. Mary's body is made a little large, so that holding a grown man on her lap looks natural.
像は古い大聖堂の礼拝堂のために作られ、いまの大聖堂に受けつがれました。ところが1972年、ひとりの男がハンマーで像をなぐりつけ、マリアの顔や腕がこわれてしまいます。修復されたあと、像は防弾ガラスの向こうに置かれるようになり、今は少し離れたところから見ることしかできません。
The statue was made for a chapel in the old basilica and was later moved into the new one. But in 1972, a man attacked it with a hammer and damaged Mary's face and arm. After it was repaired, the statue was placed behind bulletproof glass. Today, visitors can only see it from a short distance away.
この像は白い石でできています。お母さんが、亡くなった息子をひざに抱いています。悲しそうですが、とても静かです。ミケランジェロはわずか24歳でこれを作りました。彼の名前が入っている作品は、これだけです。
This statue is made of white stone. A mother holds her dead son on her lap. She looks sad but very quiet. Michelangelo made it when he was only 24. It is the only work with his name on it.

Secretsマリアの胸のたすきには「フィレンツェのミケランジェロ・ブオナローティが作った」とラテン語で彫られています。彼が名前を入れたのはこの作品だけ。別の彫刻家の作品だとうわさされているのを聞き、夜中に彫りに来たという話を、伝記作家ヴァザーリが伝えています。
On the band across Mary's chest, Latin words say that Michelangelo Buonarroti of Florence made it. It is the only work he ever signed. The writer Vasari tells a story: Michelangelo heard people say another sculptor had made it, so he came back at night and carved his name.
この仕事の契約では、銀行家ヤコポ・ガッリが「いまローマにあるどの大理石作品よりも美しいものになる」と保証しました。まだ20代前半の若者にとっては、とんでもないプレッシャーです。そしてミケランジェロは、その約束をみごとに守りました。
In the contract, the banker Jacopo Galli promised that it would be more beautiful than any marble work in Rome. That was huge pressure for a sculptor in his early twenties. And Michelangelo kept the promise.
1972年、ひとりの男が「わたしはキリストだ」とさけびながら、ハンマーで像を何度もなぐりました。マリアの左腕が折れ、鼻やまぶたもかけてしまいます。修復チームは散らばった破片を集め、何か月もかけてていねいにつなぎ合わせました。
In 1972, a man shouted “I am Jesus Christ!” and hit the statue again and again with a hammer. Mary's left arm broke, and parts of her nose and eyelid were lost. Restorers gathered the scattered pieces and spent months carefully putting them back.
よく見ると、マリアは大人の息子をもつ母親にしては、とても若い顔をしています。弟子のコンディヴィによると、ミケランジェロは「清らかな女性は、いつまでも若さを保つものだ」と説明したそうです。
Look closely: Mary looks very young for the mother of a grown man. According to his pupil Condivi, Michelangelo explained that a pure woman keeps her youth for a long time.

Her left hand is open and turned up. It seems to say “Look,” or to show that she accepts what has happened.

マリアのひざをおおう布。かたい大理石とは思えない、深くてやわらかなしわが刻まれています。
The cloth over Mary's knees has deep, soft folds. It is hard to believe it is made of stone.
