This statue is made of white stone. A mother holds her dead son on her lap. She looks sad but very quiet. Michelangelo made it when he was only 24. It is the only work with his name on it.

“Pietà” means “pity” in Italian. The statue shows Mary holding her son Jesus on her lap after he was taken down from the cross. Michelangelo finished it when he was only 24. It stands in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, and people from all over the world come to see it.

🦉 Fun Fact! On the band across Mary's chest, Latin words say that Michelangelo Buonarroti of Florence made it. It is the only work he ever signed. The writer Vasari tells a story: Michelangelo heard people say another sculptor had made it, so he came back at night and carved his name.
