この作品のお話
Story円い画面の中で、聖母マリアが体を大きくひねり、後ろのヨセフから幼子イエスを受けとろうとしています。右の低い壁の向こうには、小さな洗礼者ヨハネ。さらに奥には、古代の像のような若者たちが座っています。フィレンツェの商人アニョロ・ドーニが注文した円形の絵（イタリア語でトンド）なので、「ドーニ・トンド」とよばれます。
In a round picture, the Virgin Mary twists her body to take the Christ Child from Joseph behind her. Behind a low wall on the right is the young John the Baptist. Further back, young men sit like ancient statues. It is called the 'Doni Tondo' because the merchant Agnolo Doni of Florence ordered this round painting, or 'tondo' in Italian.
この絵は、ドーニとマッダレーナ・ストロッツィの結婚（1504年）の記念に注文されたと考えられています。ミケランジェロは自分を彫刻家だと考えていた人で、人物はまるで大理石をほったように力強く、ピンク・オレンジ・青のあざやかな色がぶつかり合います。システィーナ礼拝堂の天井画にとりかかる数年前の作品です。
It is thought to have been ordered to celebrate Doni's marriage to Maddalena Strozzi in 1504. Michelangelo saw himself as a sculptor, and the figures look as strong as if they were carved from marble. Bright pinks, oranges and blues stand side by side. He painted it a few years before he began the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
ミケランジェロが完成させた板の絵として確実に残っているのは、これ1点だけと言われます。体を大きくひねるポーズとあざやかな色は、のちの「マニエリスム」とよばれる画家たちに大きな影響をあたえました。今もフィレンツェのウフィツィ美術館で、当時の豪華な彫刻の額に入って展示されています。
It is said to be the only finished panel painting by Michelangelo that surely survives. Its twisting poses and bright colors had a great influence on later painters known as the Mannerists. It still hangs in the Uffizi in Florence, in its rich carved frame from the time.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsヴァザーリによると、ドーニは70ドゥカートは高いと言って40しか払おうとしませんでした。怒ったミケランジェロは「100か、絵を返せ」と言い、ドーニが100で手を打とうとすると、今度は140を要求したそうです。
According to Vasari, Doni thought 70 ducats was too much and offered only 40. The angry Michelangelo demanded 100 or the painting back. When Doni agreed to 100, Michelangelo asked for 140.
聖家族の後ろで、なぜか古代の像のような若者たちがくつろいでいます。キリスト教以前の古い世界を表すという説などがありますが、ミケランジェロの意図ははっきりわかっていません。
Behind the Holy Family, young men relax like ancient statues. One theory says they stand for the old world before Christianity, but no one knows exactly what Michelangelo meant.
この絵は、当時作られた豪華な木彫りの額に今も入っています。額にはキリストや預言者などの5つの顔がほられていて、デザインにはミケランジェロ自身がかかわったとも言われます。
The painting is still in its rich carved wooden frame from the time. Five heads, including Christ and prophets, are carved on it. Some say Michelangelo himself helped design it.
注文主のアニョロ・ドーニと妻マッダレーナは、若きラファエロにも自分たちの肖像画を描かせています。ライバル2人の作品が、同じ夫婦のために生まれたのです。夫婦の肖像は2018年から、ウフィツィ美術館でこの絵の近くに展示されています。
Agnolo Doni and his wife Maddalena also had the young Raphael paint their portraits. So works by two rivals were made for the same couple. Since 2018, their portraits have been shown near this painting in the Uffizi.
