No one knows what this scene is about — one of art history's greatest puzzles.
Lightning flashes in the sky over a distant town, and a storm is coming. On the left, a young man stands with a long staff. On the right, a woman holding a baby glances at us. Between them are a river and broken columns. This small painting is by the Venetian artist Giorgione. After 500 years, no one is sure what it means.
Before this, paintings usually told well-known stories from the Bible or myths. But this painting gives us almost no clues to a story. The real star is not the people but the air and light before the storm, and the trees moving in the wind. It is said to be one of the first Western paintings to make the landscape itself the main subject. Giorgione probably worked out his ideas on the canvas as he painted.
Around 1530, the painting was in the home of a Venetian nobleman, Gabriele Vendramin, and was described as a small landscape with a storm and a soldier. Giorgione died of the plague in 1510, in his early thirties. Only a few paintings are certainly by him. Even so, this one had a great influence on Venetian painters.
A storm is coming to a small town. Lightning flashes in the sky. A young man stands on the left. A woman holds a baby on the right. No one knows the story of this picture!
X-rays showed that a woman sitting by the water was first painted where the young man now stands. Giorgione changed his mind, painted over her and added the young man. This discovery made the meaning of the painting even more mysterious.
Scholars have suggested many meanings: a Bible story, a Greek myth, the painter's own family, or a symbol of the power of nature. Some say there are dozens of theories, but none can be proved. Perhaps having no answer is what makes the painting so attractive.
A record from around 1530 calls the young man a soldier. But he wears no armor and carries no sword — only a long staff. Some people think he is a shepherd or a traveler. Even the earliest description leaves us puzzled.
Giorgione died in his early thirties and almost never signed his work. So only a few paintings, including The Tempest, are certainly his. Some pictures are hard to tell apart from those of Titian, who worked with him.
