Story聖母マリアが、自分の母である聖アンナのひざにすわり、前に身をのり出して幼子イエスに手をのばしています。イエスは子羊にまたがろうとしてふり返っています。後ろには青くかすむ岩山。おばあちゃん・お母さん・子どもの3世代を、1つのピラミッドのような形にまとめた絵です。
The Virgin Mary sits on the lap of her mother, Saint Anne, and leans forward to reach for the Christ Child. Jesus tries to climb onto a lamb and looks back at her. Behind them are blue, misty mountains. The painting puts three generations, grandmother, mother and child, into one pyramid shape.
子羊は、イエスがのちに人々のために命をささげることを表すしるしです。マリアはわが子を引きもどそうとしているように見え、アンナは静かにほほえんで見守ります。レオナルドは1500年代のはじめにフィレンツェでこのテーマに取り組み始め、輪郭をぼかす「スフマート」という技法で、人物や山をやわらかな空気でつつみました。
The lamb is a sign that Jesus will later give his life for people. Mary seems to pull her son back, while Anne watches with a calm smile. Leonardo began working on this subject in Florence in the early 1500s. He used sfumato, a way of blurring outlines, to wrap the figures and mountains in soft air.
レオナルドはこの絵を手元に置き、フランスへ移ったあとも、1519年に亡くなるまで筆を入れ続けたと考えられています。足もとの地面などは、描きかけのまま残っています。今はルーヴル美術館にあり、2011年の修復では、明るくなりすぎたかどうかをめぐって専門家のあいだで大きな議論が起きました。
Leonardo kept this painting with him. He is thought to have kept working on it after he moved to France, until his death in 1519. Parts such as the ground at the bottom are still unfinished. It is now in the Louvre. Its 2011 restoration started a big debate among experts about whether it had become too bright.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets2008年、ルーヴル美術館は、この絵の板の裏側にかすかなスケッチが見つかったと発表しました。馬の頭、半分のどくろ、子羊と遊ぶ幼子イエスです。馬の頭とどくろは、レオナルド本人の手によるものとみられています。
In 2008, the Louvre announced that faint sketches had been found on the back of the panel: a horse's head, half a skull, and the Christ Child with a lamb. The horse and skull are believed to be by Leonardo himself.
心理学者フロイトの弟子プフィスターは、マリアの青い衣の形の中にハゲワシがかくれていると言い出しました。でもこれは、レオナルドの思い出話に出てくる鳥「トビ」を、ドイツ語訳で「ハゲワシ」とまちがえたことから生まれた説でした。
Oskar Pfister, a follower of the psychologist Freud, claimed that a vulture was hidden in the shape of Mary's blue robe. But the idea came from a translation mistake: the bird in Leonardo's childhood memory was a kite, not a vulture.
2011年の修復では、古いニスを取りのぞいて色が明るくなりました。ところが「やりすぎだ」と反対した専門家が、修復を見守る委員会を辞める騒ぎになりました。名画の修復は、いつも難しい判断なのです。
In the 2011 restoration, old varnish was removed and the colors became brighter. Some experts said it went too far and quit the committee that was watching over the work. Restoring a masterpiece is always a difficult choice.
ヴァザーリによると、レオナルドがフィレンツェで聖アンナを描いた下絵を公開したとき、老若男女が2日間も見物に押しかけたそうです。完成した絵ではなく、下絵でこの人気だったのです。
According to Vasari, when Leonardo showed a drawing of Saint Anne in Florence, men and women, young and old, crowded in to see it for two days. It was only a drawing, not a finished painting.
