An angel visits Mary in a garden. He brings big news from God. The angel holds a white flower. Leonardo painted this when he was about 20. Later, someone made the angel's wings longer!

The angel Gabriel kneels and tells the Virgin Mary that she will have the Son of God. He holds a white lily, a symbol of purity. Mary keeps one hand on her open book and quietly raises her left hand in surprise. Leonardo da Vinci is thought to have painted this at about 20, while he was working in the studio of his teacher, Verrocchio.

【本文の訳】天使ガブリエルがひざまずき、聖母マリアに「あなたは神の子を身ごもります」と告げる場面です。天使の手には、清らかさを表す白いユリ。マリアは読みかけの本に手を置いたまま、静かに左手を上げて驚きを表しています。レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチが20歳ごろ、師匠ヴェロッキオの工房にいたころの作品と考えられています。
