Someone is in the mirror! The puzzling painting signed “Jan van Eyck was here.”
In a room, a man in a big black hat and a woman in a green dress hold hands. There are oranges by the window, a chandelier on the ceiling, a little dog at their feet and wooden sandals on the floor. The Northern Renaissance painter Jan van Eyck made this portrait in 1434. He painted the scene in amazing detail, so it looks almost real.
Van Eyck built up many layers of oil paint to show reflected light and even the feel of cloth. The round mirror on the back wall shows the couple from behind, and two more people standing in the doorway. Above the mirror, fancy writing says “Jan van Eyck was here 1434.” One of the two people in the mirror may be the artist himself.
In the 16th century, the painting passed through the hands of women of the Habsburg family and entered the Spanish royal collection. After the wars of the early 19th century, it came to a British officer, James Hay. In 1842, the National Gallery in London bought it. Its mysterious mirror has fascinated many later artists.
A man and a woman stand in a room. Look at the round mirror on the wall. You can see two more people in it! Above the mirror, the painter wrote, “Jan van Eyck was here.” A small dog stands at their feet.
Look closely at the round mirror. Besides the couple seen from behind, two more people stand in the doorway. One of them may be Van Eyck himself. Tiny scenes from the story of Christ are painted around the mirror's frame.
Most signatures say “painted by,” but this one on the wall says “Jan van Eyck was here 1434.” Some think it shows that the painter was there as a witness to an important event, such as a marriage.
The chandelier has one lit candle, even though it is daytime, and another candle that has gone out. Some say the flame stands for God's presence and the candle that has gone out stands for someone who has died. But no one knows for sure.
For a long time, people thought this showed the wedding of Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami. But in 1997, it was found that they married in 1447 — 13 years after the painting and after Van Eyck's death. Now the man is thought to be another member of the Arnolfini family.
