迷路宰相が聖母とほぼ同じ大きさに！？窓の向こうの小さな町に、画家本人がいるかも。A chancellor shown almost as large as Mary! And the painter may be hiding in the tiny view.
この作品のお話
Story豪華な柱の間で、毛皮つきの服の男性がひざまずいて祈り、向かい合う聖母マリアのひざでは幼いイエスが祝福のしぐさをしています。天使がマリアに冠をかぶせようとしています。男性は、ブルゴーニュ公国の宰相ニコラ・ロラン。ヤン・ファン・エイクが1430〜1435年ごろに描き、今はパリのルーヴル美術館にあります。
Between rich columns, a man in a fur-trimmed robe kneels and prays. Facing him, the Virgin Mary holds the young Jesus on her lap, and Jesus raises his hand in blessing. An angel is about to place a crown on Mary's head. The man is Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duchy of Burgundy. Jan van Eyck painted this around 1430–1435. It is now in the Louvre in Paris.
ロランは当時60歳近く。この絵は、ロランが祈りのために注文したと考えられていますが、はじめから教会に置くためだったのかはわかっていません。ふつう、注文主は聖母より小さく、すみのほうに描かれるものですが、ここではロランが聖母とほぼ同じ大きさで、正面から向き合っています。アーチの向こうには、川の流れる町と遠くの雪山まで、おどろくほど細かく描かれています。
Rolin was nearly 60 years old. He probably ordered the painting to help him pray, but we do not know if it was meant for a church from the start. Usually, a donor was painted smaller than Mary and off to the side. But here Rolin is almost the same size as Mary and faces her directly. Through the arches, we see a town on a river and even snowy mountains far away, painted in amazing detail.
絵はロランの故郷オータンのノートル＝ダム＝デュ＝シャテル教会にありました。フランス革命のときに没収されてオータンの中央学校に移され、1800年にルーヴル美術館へ入りました。近年の修復で黄ばんだニスが取りのぞかれ、2024年にはこの絵を中心にした展覧会がルーヴルで開かれました。
The painting was kept in the church of Notre-Dame-du-Châtel in Autun, Rolin's hometown. During the French Revolution, it was seized and taken to a school in Autun. In 1800, it entered the Louvre. A recent restoration removed the yellow varnish, and in 2024 the Louvre held an exhibition centered on this painting.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets赤外線で下絵を調べると、ロランの腰には、はじめ大きな財布がぶら下がっていたことがわかりました。完成した絵では消されています。大臣としてお金持ちになった人物には、ふさわしくないと考えたのかもしれません。
Infrared studies of the drawing under the paint show that Rolin first had a large purse hanging from his belt. It was removed in the finished painting. Maybe a big purse did not look right on a man who had grown rich in office.
庭の向こうの城壁には、外の景色をながめる2人の小さな男性がいます。右の人は赤いずきんをかぶっていて、ファン・エイクの自画像とされる『ターバンの男の肖像』とよく似ています。画家と助手ではないか、という説があります。
On the wall beyond the garden, two tiny men look out at the view. The man on the right wears a red headdress, much like the one in Van Eyck's probable self-portrait, Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban. Some think they are the painter and his assistant.
1443年、ロランと妻ギゴーヌ・ド・サランは、フランスのボーヌに貧しい病人のための病院オテル・デューを建てました。今は「オスピス・ド・ボーヌ」の一部です。病院を支えるぶどう畑のワインの競売は今も毎年開かれ、世界中のワイン好きが注目しています。
In 1443, Rolin and his wife, Guigone de Salins, founded the Hôtel-Dieu, a hospital for poor and sick people in Beaune, France. It is now part of the Hospices de Beaune. Wine from its vineyards is still sold at a famous auction every year, and wine lovers all over the world follow it.
赤外線の調査では、幼いイエスの手も、はじめは床のほうを指していたことがわかっています。ファン・エイクは描きながら、ロランを祝福するしぐさに変えたのです。小さな変更で、絵の意味が大きく変わりました。
Infrared studies also show that the baby Jesus first pointed down at the floor. As Van Eyck painted, he changed it to a gesture blessing Rolin. A small change made a big difference to the meaning.
