A rich man prays to Mary. Mary holds baby Jesus. An angel has a crown. Look at the town behind them. Two tiny men stand on the wall. One may be the painter!

Between rich columns, a man in a fur-trimmed robe kneels and prays. Facing him, the Virgin Mary holds the young Jesus on her lap, and Jesus raises his hand in blessing. An angel is about to place a crown on Mary's head. The man is Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of the Duchy of Burgundy. Jan van Eyck painted this around 1430–1435. It is now in the Louvre in Paris.

🦉 Fun Fact! Infrared studies of the drawing under the paint show that Rolin first had a large purse hanging from his belt. It was removed in the finished painting. Maybe a big purse did not look right on a man who had grown rich in office.
