Is this the painter himself? His motto reads 'As I can.'
A man with a red cloth wrapped around his head looks at us from a slight angle. Jan van Eyck, a painter from Flanders (now Belgium), painted this portrait in 1433. It is now in the National Gallery in London. The panel is only about 26 cm tall, but every wrinkle and bit of stubble is painted as if seen through a magnifying glass.
Van Eyck used oil paint skillfully to make light and textures look real. With fine brushwork, he painted the deep folds of the red cloth, the soft fur collar and the wet shine of the eyes. The man looks straight into our eyes, and this is thought to be one of the earliest portraits to do so.
Words are written on the original frame. At the bottom it says, 'Jan van Eyck made me, 21 October 1433.' At the top it says 'ALS ICH CAN,' meaning 'As I can.' Since the sitter's name appears nowhere, many think it may be a self-portrait. This image shows only the painting, not the frame.
A man wears a big red cloth on his head. He looks at us. The picture is very small. But you can see tiny lines on his face. Maybe the painter painted himself!
'ALS ICH CAN' means 'As I can.' The word 'ICH' (I) sounds like the painter's name, Eyck, so the motto is thought to be a pun on his name. It sounds modest, but it also shows pride in his skill.
In 1439, Van Eyck also painted his wife, Margaret. Her frame says that her husband Jan finished the portrait. It also has the same motto, spelled with some Greek letters. That portrait is now in a museum in Bruges, Belgium.
Look closely and you will see thin red veins in the whites of his eyes. Very few painters show such detail. If it is a self-portrait, some imagine his eyes were tired from staring into a mirror for a long time.
The red cloth that looks like a turban is a chaperon, a fashionable hat in Flanders at that time. It had a ring-shaped headpiece with a long tail of cloth, and here the tail is wrapped around the head. Van Eyck painted its many folds so that they look almost like sculpture.
