Called the most stolen artwork ever! One panel is still missing today.
This huge altarpiece stands in the cathedral of Ghent, Belgium. When its doors are open, you can see twelve painted panels. At the top are God on his throne, Mary, John the Baptist, singing angels, and Adam and Eve at the ends. Below, people from all over the world come to worship a lamb on an altar in a green meadow. The lamb is a symbol of Jesus Christ.
An inscription on the frame says that Hubert van Eyck began the work and his brother Jan finished it in 1432. Jan used many thin layers of oil paint. He painted shining jewels, soft fur and dozens of kinds of plants in amazing detail. Oil paint was used before, but this altarpiece showed how much it could do.
The altarpiece was taken away many times. French revolutionary soldiers carried it to Paris, and the side panels were sold and ended up in Germany. In World War II, the Nazis took it, and it was found in a salt mine in Austria. A big restoration began in 2012 and is still going on. In the finished parts, paint added hundreds of years later has been removed, and the original colors have come back to life.
This is a very big painting in a church in Belgium. It has twelve parts. In the middle, people come to see a white lamb. People say it is the most stolen painting in history. One part was stolen in 1934, and nobody found it.
In 1934, the lower-left panel, 'The Just Judges', was stolen, and ransom letters arrived. The man believed to be the thief said on his deathbed that only he knew where it was. The panel has never been found. The one you see today is a copy painted around 1945.
During restoration in 2019–2020, experts removed paint that had been added to the lamb's face long ago. Underneath was the original lamb, staring straight at us with big eyes. People online said it looked strangely human, but this is the face the Van Eycks painted.
In the 19th century, some people felt that the Adam and Eve panels were not right for a church. For a time, they were replaced by copies in which Adam and Eve wear clothes made of fur. Those copies are still kept in the cathedral.
The inscription praises Hubert as the greatest painter of all. But no other painting can be surely called his work. Experts still argue about which parts of the altarpiece Hubert painted.

Adam
Adam is almost life-size. His foot seems to step out of the frame. It was painted for people looking up at it from below.
God on the throne
