The only one of the six with a mysterious motto. Is she putting the necklace away or taking it out?
On a red background full of flowers, a lady stands in front of a blue tent. She holds a necklace over a jewelry box held by her maid. We do not know if she is putting it away or taking it out. A lion on the left and a unicorn on the right hold up flags. Above the tent are the French words 'À mon seul désir,' meaning 'To my only desire.' This is one of the six Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, made around 1500. It is in the Musée de Cluny in Paris.
Five of the six tapestries show the five senses: taste, hearing, sight, smell and touch. Only this one has a mysterious motto. The coat of arms on the flags belongs to the Le Viste family, important people in Paris. The designs were probably drawn in Paris and woven in Flanders, around present-day Belgium.
In the 19th century, the tapestries were at Boussac Castle in central France. In 1841, the writer Prosper Mérimée, an inspector of historic buildings, reported that they were damp and damaged and asked the state to save them. The writer George Sand also wrote about them, and they became widely known. The Musée de Cluny bought them in 1882. Today all six hang together in a special round room.

The necklace looks like one the lady wears in other tapestries of the set. Here she holds it over the box. Some read this as giving up the pleasures of the senses and choosing with her own heart. Others think she is taking it out of the box. No one knows for sure.
In the Harry Potter films, look closely at the walls of the Gryffindor common room. Copies of these six tapestries hang there. A medieval masterpiece became decoration in a school of magic.
Prosper Mérimée, who examined the tapestries in 1841, worked as an inspector of historic buildings. He also wrote the story Carmen, which later became a famous opera. His report helped save the damaged masterpieces.
The tapestries first left France in 1973–1974, for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The second time was Japan in 2013. All six were shown at the National Art Center in Tokyo and the National Museum of Art in Osaka.
