A unicorn rests in a field of flowers. Could the red spots be juice rather than blood?
Among countless colorful flowers, a white unicorn sits quietly inside a round fence. It wears a gold collar and is chained to a pomegranate tree. It is one of the Unicorn Tapestries, designed in Paris and woven around 1495–1505 in the area that is now Belgium. It is usually shown as the last scene, but the original order is not certain. It hangs in The Met Cloisters in New York.
In other scenes of the series, hunters chase the unicorn and finally catch it. In this one, usually seen as the final scene, the unicorn is alive and resting in a garden. The fence is low and the chain is loose, so it could probably escape. People have read it in many ways: as a lover who chooses to stay, or as Christ who has risen again.
For centuries, the tapestries belonged to the La Rochefoucauld family in France. In 1922, the American millionaire John D. Rockefeller Jr. bought them for about one million dollars. He gave them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1937. They are shown at The Cloisters, a museum built like a medieval monastery, which opened the next year.
This is a big cloth picture. A white unicorn sits in a garden. It has one long horn. There are many flowers around it. The red spots on its body are probably fruit juice, not blood!
There are red spots on the unicorn's white body. They look like blood, but they are thought to be juice dripping from the pomegranates above. Pomegranates have many seeds, so they were a sign of marriage and many children.
During the French Revolution, the tapestries were taken from the castle. It is said they were used to cover potatoes and other crops, and they were damaged at that time. What we see today survived all that.
More than 100 kinds of plants are woven into the Unicorn Tapestries. Botanists have named 85 of them as real plants. They are a tapestry, but as accurate as a plant guidebook.
The letters 'A' and 'E', tied with a cord, are woven into the corners and on the tree. No one knows whose initials they are. Some think they belong to the person who ordered the set, or to a couple getting married.
