The Très Riches Heures is a prayer book made for John, Duke of Berry. The Limbourg brothers painted it around 1411–1416. A 'book of hours' has prayers for set times of the day. Its calendar pages, showing life in each month, are famous. Some call it the most beautiful manuscript in the world.
This page is called the Anatomical Man. Two figures stand back to back, one facing us and one facing away. Star signs are placed on the body from head to feet. Around them, an almond-shaped frame shows the signs and the days of the year. The words in the corners explain each sign's nature and direction.
The blue shields in the top corners are the coat of arms of the Duke of Berry. He was a rich prince who loved collecting books and jewels. The book passed through many owners. In 1856, the Duke of Aumale bought it in Italy. Today it belongs to the Musée Condé at the Château de Chantilly, near Paris.

In medieval medicine, each of the 12 star signs ruled a part of the body. Aries ruled the head, Cancer the chest, and Pisces the feet. Doctors checked the moon's sign to choose good days for treatment.
In 1416, the three Limbourg brothers and the Duke of Berry all died. A disease may have been the cause. The book was left unfinished. About 70 years later, another painter, Jean Colombe, and others finished it.
The bright blue in the ovals is probably ultramarine. It was made by grinding lapis lazuli, a stone from Afghanistan. It came from far across the sea and was extremely expensive.
The Duke of Aumale bought this book in 1856. He left Chantilly and its collection to the Institut de France, with a rule that the works must not be lent out. The real book is fragile, so a copy is usually shown.
