ヘルマン、ポール、ジャンの3人兄弟で、今のオランダのナイメーヘンに生まれました。おじは、ブルゴーニュ公の宮廷画家ジャン・マルエルです。ヘルマンとジャンは少年のころパリで金細工を学び、のちに3兄弟はフランス王家の一族であるブルゴーニュ公やベリー公に仕えました。小さな本のページに、宝石のような色で、おどろくほど細かい絵を描きました。代表作は『ベリー公のいとも豪華なる時祷書』です。
Herman, Paul and Jean were three brothers born in Nijmegen, in today's Netherlands. Their uncle, Jean Malouel, was court painter to the Duke of Burgundy. As boys, Herman and Jean trained with a goldsmith in Paris. Later, all three brothers worked for two French royal princes, the Duke of Burgundy and the Duke of Berry. On small book pages, they painted amazingly detailed pictures in jewel-like colors. Their masterpiece is the Très Riches Heures of the Duke of Berry.
