Rabbits and frogs doing sumo!? The scroll called Japan's oldest manga.
The Chōjū-giga is a set of four handscrolls kept at Kōzanji Temple in Kyoto. It is a National Treasure. In the most famous one, Scroll A, rabbits, frogs and monkeys act like people. They swim, hold an archery contest, do sumo and even hold a Buddhist service. The scroll is more than 11 meters long. This image joins the whole of Scroll A into one long strip.
It was painted in the 12th century, near the end of the Heian period. It has long been said to be the work of Toba Sōjō Kakuyū, a monk who loved drawing. But there is no proof, and several artists probably worked on it. There is no color, only ink lines. The confident, free brushstrokes make the animals' moves and faces come alive.
It tells its story with no words at all, only pictures. So it is sometimes called Japan's oldest manga. The originals are now kept at the national museums in Tokyo and Kyoto, and Kōzanji shows copies. The animals appear on goods of all kinds and are still hugely popular after 900 years. You can enjoy it starting from any scene.
This is a very long picture scroll. Rabbits, frogs and monkeys play like people. They swim, shoot arrows and do sumo. Look! A frog throws a rabbit. There are no words, only pictures.
In the sumo scene, lines come out of the mouth of the frog that throws the rabbit. They seem to show a shout or a breath, and they remind modern viewers of effect lines in manga. Simple ink lines show sound and energy.
At a 2021 exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum, a moving walkway was set up in front of Scroll A so that crowds could see it without blocking the way. It was a rare way to see a masterpiece—without stopping.
Near the end, a frog sits like a Buddha statue with a leaf behind it as a halo. A monkey monk reads a sutra. Some think this pokes fun at important monks. Sharp humor may be hidden among the funny animals.
In the Edo period, funny cartoons with long-limbed people were called Toba-e, after Toba Sōjō, the legendary artist. His name became the name of a whole style.
