この作品のお話
Story『信貴山縁起絵巻』は、奈良の信貴山で修行した僧・命蓮（みょうれん）の不思議な話をえがいた3巻の絵巻で、国宝です。この「飛倉の巻」では、命蓮の鉢が、ケチな長者の米倉を持ち上げて空へ飛び去ります。あわてて追いかける人びと、馬で飛び出す男、口をあけて見上げる顔が、生き生きとえがかれています。
The Legends of Mount Shigi is a set of three handscrolls about Myōren, a monk who lived on Mount Shigi in Nara. It is a National Treasure. In the 'Flying Granary' scroll, Myōren's alms bowl lifts a stingy rich man's storehouse and flies away with it. People chase it in a panic, a man rides out on a horse, and faces look up with open mouths.
命蓮は鉢を飛ばして、ふもとの長者の家から食べ物をもらっていました。ところがある日、長者の家の人は鉢を倉の中に置いたまま忘れて、戸に鍵をかけてしまいます。すると鉢は倉ごと浮かび上がり、山へ飛んでいきました。12世紀の平安時代末に描かれ、身分の高い人だけでなく、ふつうの人びとの表情や動きがゆたかにえがかれているのが特徴です。
Myōren used to send his bowl flying down to a rich man's house to receive food. One day, the rich man's household left the bowl in the storehouse, forgot about it and locked the door. Then the bowl rose up with the whole storehouse and flew to the mountain. The scroll was painted in the late 12th century. It is special because it shows ordinary people, not only nobles, with lively faces and movements.
物語のつづきでは、命蓮は倉は返しませんでしたが、米俵は鉢に一俵のせて飛ばし、残りの俵も列になって飛んで長者の家へ帰っていきました。ほかの2巻には、天皇の病気を治す「延喜加持の巻」と、命蓮の姉が弟をさがして旅する「尼公の巻」があります。3巻を通して、命蓮のふしぎな力が語られます。
Later in the story, Myōren kept the storehouse but sent the rice back. He put one rice bale on the bowl, and all the other bales flew home behind it in a line. The other two scrolls show Myōren healing an emperor, and his older sister traveling to find him. Across the three scrolls, Myōren's amazing powers are told.
あるお坊さんが、魔法のおわんを持っていました。ある日、お金持ちの男がそれを倉にしまいこみました。するとおわんは、倉ごと飛んでいってしまいました！人びとはそれを追いかけて走りました。この絵は800年以上前のものです。
A monk had a magic bowl. One day, a rich man locked it in his storehouse. Then the bowl flew away with the whole storehouse! People ran after it. This picture is over 800 years old.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets「尼公の巻」には、命蓮の姉が東大寺の大仏の前で祈る場面があります。東大寺は1180年の戦火で焼けたため、それより前の大仏と大仏殿の姿を伝える、とても貴重な絵だと考えられています。
In the sister's scroll, she prays before the Great Buddha of Tōdaiji. Tōdaiji burned in 1180. So this picture may show how the Buddha and its hall looked before the fire. It is a very precious record.
「延喜加持の巻」では、命蓮が送った「剣の護法」という童子が、剣をつないだ衣を着て、輪を転がしながら空を走ります。現代のアニメのヒーローを思わせるほど、劇的な登場です。
In the healing scroll, Myōren sends a spirit boy called the Sword Guardian. He wears a robe made of swords and races through the sky rolling a wheel. It is such a dramatic entrance that it may remind modern viewers of an anime hero.
命蓮は10世紀ごろに実在したお坊さんとされ、信貴山の朝護孫子寺を栄えさせた人物として知られます。不思議な話は伝説ですが、主人公は実在の人なのです。絵巻は、その人物を伝説の主人公にしたのです。
Myōren is thought to be a real monk who lived around the 10th century. He helped Chōgosonshiji Temple on Mount Shigi grow. The miracles are legends, but the hero was a real person. The scroll turned him into a legendary hero.
絵巻の中で、返される米俵は、空に列をつくって飛んでいきます。物語では、雁の群れのようにつらなって飛んだと語られます。絵巻ならではの、動きのある見せ場です。空いっぱいに俵がならぶ、ゆかいな場面です。
In the scroll, the returned rice bales fly through the sky in a line. The story says they flew like a flock of geese. It is a lively scene only a handscroll can show. Rice bales fill the sky in a funny scene.

People throw up their hands in panic. Their faces and movements are full of life.

馬に乗って飛び出す男。長者の家の人びとの大さわぎが伝わります。
A man rides out on a horse. You can feel the panic at the rich man's house.
