A huge fire lights up the night! A blazing scroll from the dawn of the samurai age.
This is part of a scroll about the Heiji Rebellion at the end of 1159. Troops led by Fujiwara no Nobuyori and Minamoto no Yoshitomo attacked the Sanjō Palace of the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa at night. They set it on fire and took him away. Red flames and black smoke fill the top half. Below, warriors in armor and horses rush about. This is the big climax of the scroll.
The scroll was painted in the late 13th century, about 100 years after the events. It begins with ox carts and people rushing at the news. The tension slowly builds, reaches its peak at this fire, and ends as the army marches away. As you unroll it from right to left, time and excitement flow like a movie.
The Heiji scrolls were probably once a large set. Only a few remain: this one in Boston, the 'Shinzei' scroll at the Seikadō Bunko Art Museum, and the 'Imperial Visit to Rokuhara' scroll, a National Treasure at the Tokyo National Museum. This scroll left Japan in the Meiji era and has belonged to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, since 1911.

Because this scroll is overseas, it is not a National Treasure of Japan. Its sister scroll is a National Treasure, so some people say this one would surely have become one too if it had stayed in Japan.
During the attack, Taira no Kiyomori was away on a pilgrimage to Kumano. He hurried back and ended the rebellion, and the Taira clan rose to power. Yoshitomo's son Yoritomo was sent away to Izu.
Minamoto no Yoritomo, sent to Izu as a boy, later defeated the Taira and founded the Kamakura shogunate. This fire marks the start of an age when samurai ruled Japan. Behind these flames lies a big turning point in history.
Look closely at the flames. Red, orange and white swirls repeat in a rhythm. The artist did not copy real fire. He turned it into a pattern to show its terrible power. Don't the flames look almost alive?
