A monk had a magic bowl. One day, a rich man locked it in his storehouse. Then the bowl flew away with the whole storehouse! People ran after it. This picture is over 800 years old.

The Legends of Mount Shigi is a set of three handscrolls about Myōren, a monk who lived on Mount Shigi in Nara. It is a National Treasure. In the 'Flying Granary' scroll, Myōren's alms bowl lifts a stingy rich man's storehouse and flies away with it. People chase it in a panic, a man rides out on a horse, and faces look up with open mouths.

🦉 Fun Fact! In the sister's scroll, she prays before the Great Buddha of Tōdaiji. Tōdaiji burned in 1180. So this picture may show how the Buddha and its hall looked before the fire. It is a very precious record.

【本文の訳】あるお坊さんが、魔法のおわんを持っていました。ある日、お金持ちの男がそれを倉にしまいこみました。するとおわんは、倉ごと飛んでいってしまいました！人びとはそれを追いかけて走りました。この絵は800年以上前のものです。

【本文の訳】『信貴山縁起絵巻』は、奈良の信貴山で修行した僧・命蓮（みょうれん）の不思議な話をえがいた3巻の絵巻で、国宝です。この「飛倉の巻」では、命蓮の鉢が、ケチな長者の米倉を持ち上げて空へ飛び去ります。あわてて追いかける人びと、馬で飛び出す男、口をあけて見上げる顔が、生き生きとえがかれています。

Fun Fact（訳）

焼ける前の奈良の大仏が見られる！ 「尼公の巻」には、命蓮の姉が東大寺の大仏の前で祈る場面があります。東大寺は1180年の戦火で焼けたため、それより前の大仏と大仏殿の姿を伝える、とても貴重な絵だと考えられています。
