Against a plain, gold-tinted background sits a single cat. It twists its body to groom its fur and suddenly looks up at us. It has white fur with brown and black patches and clear blue-green eyes. This is Hanbyō ('Tabby Cat'), painted in 1924 by Takeuchi Seihō, a Japanese-style painter from Kyoto. It is an Important Cultural Property and belongs to the Yamatane Museum of Art in Tokyo.
While traveling in Numazu, Shizuoka, Seihō saw this cat at a vegetable shop and was deeply attracted to it. He is said to have asked the owner to let him have the cat, taken it home to Kyoto, and watched it closely every day as he painted. The soft fur is made of many fine lines drawn one by one, mixed with lines of gold paint called kindei.
By leaving the background empty, Seihō made the cat's round body and its strong eyes stand out. It is one of his greatest works, mixing Western realism with Japanese painting traditions, and it is still loved as a masterpiece of animal painting. In 1937, Seihō became one of the first people to receive the Order of Culture.

In Numazu, Seihō saw this cat at a vegetable shop. It is said that it reminded him of a cat painted by the Chinese emperor Huizong. He wanted to paint it so much that he got the cat and took it home to Kyoto.
Today, a spotted cat is usually written with the character 斑. But the character 班 can also mean 'spotted.' This painting's title is written with 班, and it is still known by that name.
Look closely at the soft fur. Among the normal paint lines are lines of kindei, gold powder mixed with glue. When light hits them, the fur shines softly, just like the gloss of real fur.
Seihō first wrote his name with a different first character, 棲. After visiting Europe in 1900 to study Western art, he is said to have changed it to 栖, which contains the character for 'west.' He even put his meeting with the West into his name.
