Raising clouds of dust, many horses rush from left to right. Men struggle to hold back the horses that rear up on their back legs. This scene of a horse market in Paris was painted by the French artist Rosa Bonheur. It is more than five meters wide. Today it is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The scene is the horse market on the Boulevard de l'Hôpital in Paris. From the summer of 1850, Bonheur went there twice a week for about a year and a half to sketch the horses. To avoid attention, she got special permission from the Paris police to dress like a man. She described the painting as her own version of the Parthenon frieze, the famous parade of carved horses on an ancient Greek temple.
When it was shown at the Salon of 1853, it was a great success, and it later toured Britain and America. In 1887, the American millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt II bought it at auction for 53,000 dollars and gave it to the Met right away. In the male-dominated art world of the 19th century, Bonheur became famous around the world as an animal painter.
Many horses run in this big picture. Some horses jump up. Men try to hold them. A woman painted this. She went to the horse market two times a week.
In Paris at that time, a woman needed permission from the police to dress like a man. Bonheur got that permission. Dressed like a man, she could blend into the crowd at the horse market and keep sketching.
It is said that when the painting toured Britain, Queen Victoria asked to see it privately at Buckingham Palace. That is how famous it was. It was very rare for a work by a woman artist to receive such attention from the royal family.
The figure near the center in a blue smock and a cap, looking out at us, is thought to be Bonheur herself. She went to the market dressed like a man, and she may have painted herself among the horse handlers.
The National Gallery in London has a version about half the size of this one. Bonheur made it in 1855 with help from Nathalie Micas, a painter who was her lifelong companion.
