Over two meters of gold and power! 'Lions' from the age of great warlords.
Chinese Lions by Kanō Eitoku is a National Treasure. Two lion-like beasts stride across a shining gold background. The screen is more than two meters tall, much bigger than most folding screens. Curly manes, thick legs and big, staring eyes overwhelm the viewer. It is full of the splendor and power of the Momoyama period.
Karajishi are imaginary beasts that came from China. They are symbols of strength and holy power. Eitoku was one of the leading painters of his time. He painted the walls and doors of Oda Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Osaka Castle. His bold style used huge subjects on huge surfaces to show the power of these great warlords.
In the Edo period, the screen belonged to the Mōri family of the Hagi domain. Its partner, the left screen, was painted later by Kanō Tsunenobu, Eitoku's great-grandson, to match this one. In 1888, when the new Imperial Palace was finished, the Mōri family gave the screens to the Imperial Family. In 2021, they were named a National Treasure. Today it is cared for at the Sannomaru Shōzōkan in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace.

A legend says Hideyoshi used this screen in his camp during the siege of Takamatsu Castle and gave it to the Mōri family when they made peace. But there is no clear record. It was so special that a legend grew around it.
The matching left screen was painted in the Edo period by Kanō Tsunenobu, Eitoku's great-grandson. He added another lion to match his great-grandfather's powerful beasts. Across time, a great-grandfather and his great-grandson made one pair.
Eitoku's paintings for Azuchi Castle, Osaka Castle and other palaces were lost with the buildings. He was one of the greatest painters of his time, yet very few works surely by him survive. This screen is a precious survivor.
Works in the Sannomaru Shōzōkan, the museum of imperial collections, were long outside the National Treasure system. In 2021, this screen and others, like Jakuchū's Colorful Realm, became the first to be named National Treasures. These long-loved works were officially recognized as treasures of the nation.
