Cypress Trees by Kanō Eitoku is a National Treasure. A thick hinoki cypress twists and stretches its branches among golden clouds. On the left are blue water and rocky hills. The tree is so big that it goes beyond the top and right edges. This image shows a pair of four-panel screens side by side. Viewers gasp at the size of the tree.
It is thought to have been painted for the sliding doors of Prince Hachijō-no-miya Toshihito's palace, finished in 1590. Toyotomi Hideyoshi had adopted the prince. But when Hideyoshi's own son Tsurumatsu was born, he ended the adoption and set up a new princely house with a palace instead. Eitoku died that same year, in his forties. This is one of his last works.
It was first made as sliding doors and later remounted as folding screens. A giant tree fills the space and even goes past the edges. This bold layout is a perfect example of Eitoku's 'great painting' style. It still carries the energy of the age of great warlords. Its overwhelming power greatly influenced later Japanese wall paintings.
