An old plum tree writhes like a dragon! Kyoto sliding doors in New York.
Old Plum by Kano Sansetsu fills four sliding doors with an ancient plum tree. Its trunk zigzags and twists like a dragon. White plum blossoms bloom on the branch tips. On the left are red flowers and a flat rock, and on the right stand sharp rocks. It was painted in 1646. Today it is one of the best-known Japanese works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Sansetsu married the daughter of Kano Sanraku and became his heir. He worked in Kyoto as part of the 'Kyoto Kano' school. When Kano Tan'yū and others moved to Edo with the shogun's government, Sansetsu stayed in Kyoto. He liked geometric forms that combine straight lines and curves, creating a mysterious, tense feeling. This plum seems less like a tree and more like a living creature with its own will.
These doors are said to have been made for Tenshōin, a small temple inside Myōshinji in Kyoto. Later they went abroad, and in 1975 they entered the Met as part of a large collection of Japanese art. The metal door pulls are still attached, so you can see they were once real doors dividing a room.
This picture is on four sliding doors. A very old plum tree twists like a dragon. It has small white flowers. When you open the doors, the tree splits in two! Now it is in New York.

The round metal fittings are door pulls. In the temple, the trunk split apart each time the doors opened and joined again when they closed. It is a uniquely Japanese art where painting and doors are one.
Sansetsu's son Kano Einō published a book called Honchō Gashi, based on his father's notes. It is a history of Japanese painters, and it even includes the story of Sesshū's mouse drawn with tears. Father and son left a record of Japanese art history.
After the main Kano school moved to Edo, Sanraku and Sansetsu's family stayed in Kyoto. They were called the Kyoto Kano and created bold, unusual works quite different from the Edo Kano. Their unusual style has become popular again in recent years.
These doors entered the Met in 1975 as part of the collection of Harry Packard, a scholar of Japanese art. The Met's haniwa and dogū, also in this museum, came from the same collection.
