Sansetsu came from Hizen, now Saga. He became a pupil of Kanō Sanraku in Kyoto, married his daughter and took over the family. When most of the Kanō school moved to Edo, his line stayed in Kyoto and was called the Kyoto Kanō. His work has strict, almost geometric compositions and strange twisting shapes. He has become very popular in recent years.
