A black cat crouches on a thick branch of a kashiwa oak in autumn. It stares at us with golden eyes. Above it are big yellow and green oak leaves. Hishida Shunsō painted it and showed it at the fourth Bunten, a national exhibition, in 1910. It is a tall, narrow hanging scroll with only a cat, leaves and branches.
Together with Yokoyama Taikan, Shunsō tried a new style of Japanese painting. Instead of outlines, he used soft shading to show air and light. Here, the oak leaves are flat, like a pattern, and gold paint is used. The cat, however, is made only with soft shades of ink, so its fur looks fluffy and its body looks round. The mix of flat leaves and a solid-looking cat is the key point.
The next year, in 1911, Shunsō died of illness. He was only 36. The painting was first bought by Akimoto Shatei, a supporter and friend of Shunsō. In the Taishō era, it went to Hosokawa Moritatsu, head of the Hosokawa family. Today it belongs to the Eisei Bunko, which keeps the family's art, and it is kept at the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art. It is an Important Cultural Property.

Shunsō first planned to show a folding screen at the exhibition. But he was not happy with it, so he stopped. Instead, he is said to have painted this cat in only five or six days. A quick replacement became one of his most famous works.
It is said that Shunsō did not like cats. Still, cats were one of his favorite subjects. He left more than 20 cat paintings, including unfinished ones. Maybe he watched them very carefully because they made him nervous.
When he was younger, Shunsō used old Chinese paintings as models and painted many spotted cats. He began painting black cats at around age 33 or 34. In just a few years before his death, he reached this masterpiece.
After more than 100 years, the scroll had waves and stains, so it got its first full repair. A crowdfunding project to repair three modern Japanese paintings, including 'Black Cat,' got 14,755,000 yen from 943 supporters. The repaired cat was shown to the public in 2025.
