Painted by her father.' A father portrays his five-year-old daughter and her doll in watercolor.
In front of a dark background, a girl with a bob haircut sits in a kimono. She holds a small doll. Next to her is a six-sided box. The girl is Reiko, the daughter of the painter Kishida Ryūsei. She was five years old. On the right edge, he wrote 'Seated portrait of Reiko, painted by her father.' On the left, he even wrote the date: January 28, 1920.
From 1917, Kishida lived in Kugenuma, Kanagawa, and painted Reiko again and again. His diary says that on January 28, 1920, he gave up a seated portrait he had started. He changed to a wide format and painted Reiko sitting with a doll next to a six-sided box. He wrote that the work was going well and that he felt he had gone one step deeper.
This watercolor was first shown in spring 1920 at Kishida's solo show of watercolors and drawings. He kept painting Reiko, and in 1921 he made the oil painting 'Reiko Smiling,' now an Important Cultural Property at the Tokyo National Museum. Reiko grew up to become a painter herself. The time a father spent with his daughter lives on in many portraits of Reiko.
A little girl sits on the floor. Her name is Reiko. She holds a small doll. Her father painted her with watercolors. He wrote 'Father painted this' on the picture.
On the back of the paper, there is a sketch of Reiko sitting that Kishida gave up. The 'stopped' picture and the 'new' picture from his diary are on the two sides of the same sheet. It is a rare record of an artist changing his mind.
The date on the left edge, January 28, is the same day Kishida wrote in his diary about changing to a wide format. It is rare to be able to read what an artist was thinking on the very day he made a picture.
The words on the right mean 'Seated portrait of Reiko, painted by her father.' He wrote 'father' instead of his own name. You can feel his special love for his daughter. It feels more like a family record than an artwork.
Reiko's grandfather, Kishida Ginkō, was a famous newspaper writer. He is also known for selling Western-style eye drops called 'Seikisui.' Ryūsei was born at Ginkō's shop in Ginza, Tokyo.
