He never saw it! An armored rhino that people believed for centuries.
In 1515, a rhinoceros arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, from India. It was the first live rhino in Europe since the days of the Roman Empire. Dürer lived in Nuremberg, Germany. He never saw the animal. He made this woodcut based on a sketch and a letter sent to him.
Its skin looks like plates of armor, its legs have scales, and there is even a small twisted horn on its back. It is quite different from a real rhino, but it is very powerful. The text at the top says the rhino is the enemy of the elephant and sharpens its horn on stones. A woodcut can be printed many times, so thousands of copies spread across Europe.
For more than 200 years, people believed this was what a rhino looked like. Books copied it again and again. Even after people drew real rhinos more correctly, Dürer's version stayed popular. It shows that imagination can stay in people's minds longer than facts.
In 1515, a rhino came to Portugal from India. Dürer never saw it! He made this picture from a letter and a sketch. His rhino looks like it wears armor. It even has a small horn on its back. Real rhinos do not have that!

The text at the top begins with '1 May 1513'. But the rhino really arrived in Lisbon on 20 May 1515. The year in the text is wrong. The large '1515' at the upper right is correct.
People believed the rhino was the enemy of the elephant. In June 1515, they set up a fight in Lisbon to test it. According to records, the young elephant ran away as soon as it saw the rhino.
The King of Portugal decided to give the rhino to Pope Leo X. But in early 1516, the ship sank in a storm off the coast of Italy. The rhino was chained, and it drowned.
Later artists loved this rhino too. The Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí made a large rhino sculpture inspired by Dürer's print. It stands near the Spanish seaside town of Marbella.
