He ignores both Death and the Devil! A knight who only looks ahead.
A knight in armor rides his horse through a dark valley. Beside him are Death, holding up an hourglass, and a horned Devil. But the knight looks only straight ahead. Albrecht Dürer made this engraving in 1513. This image shows a print owned by the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Together with Melencolia I and Saint Jerome in His Study, this work is called one of Dürer's three 'Master Engravings.' The knight is thought to be a Christian who follows the path of faith without giving in to fear or temptation. Some link it to the scholar Erasmus's book 'Handbook of the Christian Soldier.'
Dürer used many fine lines packed closely together to show the shine of metal armor, the horse's muscles and even the dog's fur. The image of a brave knight riding on caught the hearts of later generations. The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche even wrote about this print in one of his books. Today it is still loved as a picture of courage in hard times.
A knight rides a horse. Death and a devil come near him. Death holds an hourglass. But the knight is brave. He does not look at them.
The title we use today was given later. In the diary of his trip to the Netherlands, Dürer simply called this print 'The Rider.' Death and the Devil were not part of the name he used.
On the tablet at the lower left are Dürer's AD mark, the year 1513 and a mysterious letter 'S.' One idea is that it stands for a Latin word meaning 'salvation,' but there are several theories and no clear answer.
Death has snakes wrapped around his head like a crown, and he rides a thin, tired horse. The hourglass in his hand means 'your time is running out.' Still, the knight does not even look at him.
The dog running at the horse's feet is thought to stand for loyalty and an eager search for truth. Even with Death and the Devil close by, the dog keeps going with its master without fear.
