German artist Albrecht Dürer painted this self-portrait at age 28. He has long curly hair, wears a fur-collared coat, and looks straight at us. On the left is the year '1500' and his famous 'AD' monogram. On the right, a Latin text says that Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg painted himself like this at 28.
当時、肖像画はななめ向きが普通で、真正面の姿はキリストを描くときの形でした。左右対称の顔、胸元の手も、祝福するキリストの姿を思わせます。神を気どったのではなく、「画家の才能は神からさずかったもの」という考えを表した、という解釈がよく知られていますが、その意味については今も議論があります。1500年という区切りの年に描かれたのも意味ありげです。
At that time, portraits usually showed people at an angle. A straight, front-facing view was used for pictures of Christ. Dürer's balanced face and the hand on his chest also remind us of Christ giving a blessing. One well-known view is that he was not pretending to be God, but showing that an artist's talent is a gift from God. Experts still discuss its meaning. The year 1500 also feels important.
デューラーは、西洋で初めて自画像をくり返し描いた画家のひとりです。13歳で鏡を見て描いた自画像も残っています。版画で全ヨーロッパに名を知られました。この絵は今、ミュンヘンのアルテ・ピナコテークの代表作として大切にされています。自画像を通して、画家とは何者かを問い続けた人でした。
Dürer was one of the first Western artists to paint himself again and again. A self-portrait he drew in a mirror at age 13 still exists. His prints made him famous all over Europe. Today, this painting is one of the treasures of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Through his self-portraits, he kept asking what an artist is.

Secretsウィーンのアルベルティーナ美術館には、デューラーが13歳のときに鏡を見て描いた銀筆の自画像があります。のちに本人が「まだ子どもだった1484年に鏡を見て描いた」と書きこみました。子どもが描いた自画像として、ヨーロッパで最も古いもののひとつです。
The Albertina in Vienna has a self-portrait Dürer drew in silverpoint at 13, looking in a mirror. Later he wrote on it that he drew it in 1484 'when I was still a child'. It is one of the oldest self-portraits by a child in Europe.
Aの中にDを入れたサインは、デューラーのトレードマーク。版画が売れすぎて、イタリアでまねされるほどでした。画家伝を書いたヴァザーリによると、デューラーは自分のマークを勝手に使われたことに抗議したといいます。
The 'D' inside the 'A' was Dürer's trademark. His prints sold so well that people copied them in Italy. According to the writer Vasari, Dürer complained when someone used his mark without permission.
右手は毛皮のえりをつまんでいるように見えます。キリストの祝福のしぐさに似ていると同時に、「この手こそが絵を生み出す」と、画家の手を見せているとも考えられています。
His hand seems to touch the fur collar. It looks like Christ's blessing gesture. It may also show that this hand is the hand that creates art.
デューラーは見た目に気をつかう人で、この絵でも髪はていねいに巻かれ、高価な毛皮のコートを着ています。職人あつかいされがちだった画家の地位を、紳士・知識人として高めたいという思いが表れているとよく言われます。
Dürer cared about his appearance. Here his hair is carefully curled, and he wears an expensive fur coat. People often say this shows his wish to raise artists from simple craftsmen to gentlemen and thinkers.
