この作品のお話
Story3枚の板を横に並べた「三連画」です。左は神がアダムとイヴを引き合わせる楽園、真ん中ははだかの人びとが巨大なイチゴや鳥とたわむれるふしぎな園、右は楽器や怪物が人をこらしめる暗い地獄。左から右へ、世界の始まりから終わりへと物語が進むように見えます。
This is a triptych, made of three panels placed side by side. On the left, God brings Adam and Eve together in Paradise. In the center, people play with giant strawberries and birds in a strange garden. On the right is a dark hell full of monsters and musical instruments. The story seems to move from the beginning of the world to its end.
作者ボスはオランダの町スヘルトーヘンボスの画家で、本名はイェルーン・ファン・アーケン。町の名前から「ボス」と名のりました。この絵は教会ではなく、ブリュッセルの貴族ナッサウ家の館に飾られていたと考えられ、客たちが細部を見て語り合うための絵だったという説があります。
Bosch lived in the Dutch town of 's-Hertogenbosch. His real name was Jheronimus van Aken, and he took the name 'Bosch' from his town. The painting probably hung in the palace of the Nassau family in Brussels, not in a church. Some experts think guests looked at the tiny details and talked about them.
のちにスペイン王フェリペ2世のものになり、1593年にエル・エスコリアル修道院へ。20世紀にプラド美術館に移り、今はいちばん人気の作品のひとつです。扉を閉じると、外側には天地創造3日目の、透明な球に入った地球が灰色だけで描かれています。シュルレアリスムの画家たちにも大きな影響をあたえました。
Later, King Philip II of Spain owned it, and in 1593 it went to the monastery of El Escorial. In the 20th century, it moved to the Prado, where it is one of the most popular works. When the wings are closed, you see the Earth inside a clear ball, painted only in grays. The painting greatly influenced the Surrealists.
この絵は3つの部分でできています。左は楽園です。真ん中では、人びとが鳥や大きなイチゴと遊んでいます。右は怪物のいる暗い地獄です。地獄では、ある男の人のおしりに楽譜があります！2014年に、ある学生がこの曲を演奏しました。
This painting has three parts. On the left is Paradise. In the middle, people play with birds and big strawberries. On the right is a dark hell with monsters. In hell, a man has musical notes on his bottom! In 2014, a student played this music.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets地獄の場面では、大きなリュートの下にたおれた人のおしりに、楽譜が描かれています。2014年、アメリカの大学生がこれを現代の楽譜に書き直してネットに公開し、「500年前のおしりの歌」として世界中で話題になりました。
In the hell scene, a man lies under a giant lute, with musical notes painted on his bottom. In 2014, an American college student rewrote them as modern sheet music and shared it online. The '500-year-old butt song' became famous around the world.
「快楽の園」という題名は後の時代につけられたものです。スペインの古い記録では、絵に出てくる果物にちなんで「イチゴノキ（マドローニョ）の絵」と呼ばれていたこともあります。ボス自身がどう呼んでいたかはわかっていません。
The title 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' was added much later. Old Spanish records sometimes called it 'the painting of the strawberry tree', after the fruit in the picture. We do not know what Bosch himself called it.
地獄の場面で、木の幹の脚と割れた卵のからだを持ち、こちらをふり返る「木の男」。その顔はボス本人の自画像ではないか、という説があります。ただし確かな証拠はなく、なぞのままです。
In hell, the 'Tree-Man' has legs like tree trunks and a body like a broken egg. He looks back at us. Some people think his face is Bosch's self-portrait. There is no clear proof, so it remains a mystery.
扉を閉じると、外側には透明な球の中に浮かぶ地球が、灰色の濃淡だけで描かれています。左上には小さく神の姿。世界が作られたばかりの3日目の様子だと考えられ、開いたときの色の洪水との差におどろかされます。
When the wings are closed, you see the Earth floating inside a clear ball, painted only in shades of gray. A tiny God sits in the upper left. It probably shows the third day of Creation. The contrast with the colorful inside is amazing.

左の楽園。神がイヴの手をとり、アダムに引き合わせています。まわりにはキリンやゾウなど、当時のヨーロッパではめずらしかった動物もいます。
In Paradise on the left, God holds Eve's hand and brings her to Adam. Around them are animals such as a giraffe and an elephant, which were rare sights in Europe at the time.
2池のまわりを回る行列Riders circling the pool
真ん中の園。丸い池のまわりを、馬やラクダ、ブタなどに乗った人びとがぐるぐる回っています。
In the central garden, people ride horses, camels and even pigs around a round pool.
3木の男The Tree-Man
割れた卵のようなからだに、頭の上には大きな円盤。中では人びとが酒場のように集まっています。
His body looks like a broken egg, and he has a big disk on his head. Inside him, people gather as if in a tavern.
4鳥の頭の怪物The bird-headed monster
地獄の王のようにいすにすわり、人を飲みこんでいる鳥頭の怪物。頭には鍋をかぶっています。
A monster with a bird's head sits on a chair like a king of hell and swallows people. It wears a pot on its head.
