Everyone grabs at a pile of hay! But where is the cart going?
Around a cart piled high with hay, people fight to grab the hay. The left wing shows Paradise, the right wing shows Hell, and the center shows our world. The Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch made this triptych, a painting in three parts, around 1512–15. It is now in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.
The hay is thought to stand for money and luxury in this world, which are empty and do not last. People say there was a saying in the Netherlands at that time: 'The world is a haystack, and everyone takes what they can.' Even powerful people follow the cart, and no one notices that it is heading toward Hell on the right.
King Philip II of Spain, who loved collecting Bosch's paintings, acquired this work in 1570. Later the three parts were separated, but in 1914 they came together again at the Prado. When the wings are closed, the outside shows a traveler walking along a road.
There is a big pile of hay on a cart. Many people want the hay. They fight and pull. Strange monsters pull the cart. It is going to a scary place!
In the sky of the center panel, Christ opens his hands above the clouds. But the people below are too busy with the hay, and no one looks up. On top of the hay, only an angel prays toward Christ.
The hay cart is not pulled by horses. It is pulled by strange monsters with fish heads and tree-like bodies. While the people are busy being greedy, the cart slowly moves toward the door of Hell.
At the lower right, nuns busily stuff hay into a big sack, while a fat monk sits nearby holding a glass. This is thought to be Bosch's joke about greedy church people.
In the right wing, devils are using ladders to build a tower. Some people say Hell is getting bigger to make room for all the people who are coming.
