Story翼のある人物が、ほおづえをついて考えこんでいます。まわりには、のこぎり、かんな、定規、コンパス、砂時計、天びん、鐘、なぞの多面体、球。足もとにはやせた犬が眠っています。遠くの空には彗星のような光と虹、コウモリのような生き物が「MELENCOLIA I」と書かれた旗をかかげています。
A winged figure sits with her head in her hand, lost in thought. Around her are a saw, a plane, a ruler, compasses, an hourglass, scales, a bell, a strange many-sided stone and a ball. A thin dog sleeps at her feet. In the sky, there is a comet-like light and a rainbow. A bat-like creature holds a banner that says 'MELENCOLIA I'.
1514年、デューラーが彫った銅版画で、「騎士と死と悪魔」「書斎の聖ヒエロニムス」とあわせて「三大銅版画」と呼ばれます。当時、メランコリー（ゆううつ）は、考える人や芸術家がかかりやすい気質とされていました。知識や道具をそろえても答えにたどりつけない、創造する人の悩みを表したという解釈がよく知られています。
Dürer made this engraving in 1514. With 'Knight, Death and the Devil' and 'Saint Jerome in His Study', it is called one of his three 'master engravings'. At that time, melancholy was thought to be the mood of thinkers and artists. A popular idea is that it shows the frustration of creative people who have all the tools but still cannot find the answer.
この版画は500年以上にわたって数えきれない解釈を生み、「美術史でもっとも議論された1枚」とも言われます。題名の「Ⅰ」の意味さえはっきりしません。版画なので世界各地の美術館に刷りがあり、この画像はアメリカのミネアポリス美術館にある1枚です。
For over 500 years, this print has led to countless interpretations. Some call it one of the most discussed images in art history. Even the meaning of the 'I' in the title is unclear. Because it is a print, many museums own copies. This image shows one at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in the US.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets右上の4×4の数の表は「魔方陣」。たて、横、ななめ、どの列を足しても34になります。下の段の真ん中2つは「15」「14」で、制作年の1514。両はしの4と1は、アルファベットの4番目と1番目、つまりDとAでデューラーの頭文字だ、という見方もあります。
The 4×4 grid at the top right is a magic square. Every row, column and diagonal adds up to 34. The two middle numbers in the bottom row are 15 and 14, the year 1514. Some people say the 4 and 1 beside them stand for D and A, the 4th and 1st letters, Dürer's initials.
左の大きな石は、少しななめにかたむいた立方体のような形の、向かい合う2つのかどを切り落とした、ふしぎな多面体だと説明されます。「デューラーの立体」と呼ばれ、正確にどんな形なのか、数学者たちが何度も計算して議論してきました。
The big stone on the left is a strange solid shape. It is usually described as a slanted, cube-like shape with two opposite corners cut off. It is called 'Dürer's solid'. Mathematicians have calculated and argued about its exact shape many times.
デューラーの母は1514年5月に亡くなりました。デューラーは、やせおとろえた母の姿を素描に残しています。この版画の深いゆううつと、母の死を結びつける研究者もいますが、はっきりした証拠はありません。
Dürer's mother died in May 1514. He made a drawing of her when she was thin and ill. Some experts connect the deep sadness of this print to her death, but there is no clear proof.
『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』の作者ダン・ブラウンの小説『ロスト・シンボル』（2009年）では、この版画の魔方陣がなぞ解きのカギとして使われています。500年前の数のパズルが、現代のミステリーで活躍したのです。
In 'The Lost Symbol' (2009), a novel by Dan Brown, the writer of 'The Da Vinci Code', this magic square is a key to solving a puzzle. A 500-year-old number puzzle appeared in a modern mystery story.
