Story青く下塗りした紙に、祈るために合わせた両手が描かれています。黒っぽい線で形をとり、白い絵の具の細い線で光を入れて、血管や筋、しわまで細かく描いて、手を立体的に見せています。ゆったりした袖口が、手を下からささえるように広がっています。たった1枚の紙の素描ですが、世界でもっとも有名な「手」の絵のひとつです。
On blue-prepared paper, two hands are pressed together in prayer. Dürer drew the shapes with dark lines and added light with thin white lines. The carefully drawn veins, tendons and wrinkles make the hands look three-dimensional. Wide sleeves seem to hold the hands from below. It is just a drawing on one sheet of paper, but it is one of the most famous pictures of hands in the world.
じつはこれは、独立した作品ではなく下描きです。1507年、デューラーはフランクフルトの商人ヤーコプ・ヘラーから祭壇画を頼まれ、聖母マリアが天にあげられる場面を見上げる使徒たちを描きました。1508年に、その一人の手を練習したのがこの素描です。デューラーはヘラーへの手紙で、手間がかかりすぎて割に合わないとこぼしています。
In fact, this is a study, not a finished work. In 1507, Jakob Heller, a merchant in Frankfurt, asked Dürer to paint an altarpiece. It showed apostles looking up as Mary was taken to heaven. In 1508, Dürer drew one apostle's hands for practice. In letters to Heller, Dürer complained that the work took too much time to be worth the money.
完成した祭壇画の中央の板は、のちにミュンヘンの宮殿に移され、1729年の火事で焼けてしまいました。今は模写でしか見られません。下描きだったこの手だけが残り、19〜20世紀には複製が世界中に広まって、教会や家庭のかざり、お墓の彫刻にまで使われる「祈り」のシンボルになりました。
The central panel of the finished altarpiece was later moved to a palace in Munich and burned in a fire in 1729. Today we can only see it in a copy. But this study of the hands survived. In the 19th and 20th centuries, copies spread around the world. It became a symbol of prayer on church and home decorations, and even on gravestones.

These are two hands. They are praying. Dürer drew them on blue paper in 1508. Some people tell a sad story about these hands, but it is not true. They were practice for a big painting. That painting burned in a fire.

Secrets「デューラーの兄が鉱山で働いて弟の学費をかせぎ、こわれてしまったその手を描いた」という感動的な話が広まっています。でもこれは20世紀に作られた物語で、事実ではありません。じっさいは祭壇画の使徒の手の練習です。
A touching story says that Dürer's brother worked in a mine to pay for Dürer's art school, and this drawing shows the brother's damaged hands. But it was made up in the 20th century. It is not true. The drawing is a study for an apostle's hands.
この手が使われたヘラー祭壇画の中央の板は、1729年にミュンヘンの宮殿の火事で焼けてしまいました。画家ハリッヒによる模写がフランクフルトに残っていて、そこで「完成形の手」を見ることができます。
The central panel of the Heller Altarpiece burned in a palace fire in Munich in 1729. A copy by the painter Jobst Harrich survives in Frankfurt, so we can still see how the hands looked in the finished work.
デューラーは注文主ヘラーに、何通も手紙を書いています。「ていねいに描くと時間がかかりすぎて、もうけにならない」「これからは版画に専念したい」という本音まで残っていて、天才画家の苦労がわかります。
Dürer wrote several letters to Heller, who ordered the altarpiece. He said careful painting took too long to make money, and that he would rather focus on prints. These letters show the real worries of a great artist.
デューラーは紙を青く下塗りしてから描きました。中間の色の上に、暗いところは黒っぽい線、明るいところは白い線を重ねると、少ない線で立体感が出せます。イタリア旅行で身につけた技法とも言われます。
Dürer first colored the paper blue. On this middle tone, he added dark lines for shadows and white lines for light. This way, a few lines can show a 3D shape. Some say he learned this method in Italy.
