A wild party on a boat! But nobody is steering...
A small boat is packed with a monk, a nun and villagers. They sing, drink and try to bite food hanging in the air. Instead of a mast, a tree grows from the boat, with a flag flying from it. Hieronymus Bosch painted this around 1505–15. It is now in the Louvre in Paris.
A ship full of fools was a well-known idea in Europe at that time. In 1494, the German writer Sebastian Brant published a book called 'The Ship of Fools,' and it became very popular. We do not know if Bosch's painting was based on this book. But it also laughs at human foolishness, showing people who enjoy themselves while no one steers the boat.
This painting is thought to have been part of a wing of a triptych. Its lower part was cut off and is now a separate painting at the Yale University Art Gallery in the United States. Some think the other wing was Death and the Miser, now in Washington. One work has been scattered across museums on both sides of the ocean.
Many people are on a small boat. They sing and eat and drink. A tree grows in the boat. Nobody is driving the boat. Where will they go?

An owl peeks out from the leaves of the tree that serves as the mast. In Bosch's paintings, owls are often thought to stand not for wisdom but for darkness, foolishness or evil. It seems to be secretly watching the boat.
Look at the lower right. Instead of an oar, a huge ladle is stuck into the water. It is the perfect tool for a boat full of people who only think about eating. They will never go straight with that!
Between the nun and the monk, a round piece of food hangs on a string. Both open their mouths wide and try to bite it without using their hands. It looks like a silly festival game.
A roast bird is tied to the tree-mast. A man with a knife climbs up to cut it down. A crescent moon can also be seen on the flag, and there are several ideas about what it means.
