Many people are on a small boat. They sing and eat and drink. A tree grows in the boat. Nobody is driving the boat. Where will they go?

A small boat is packed with a monk, a nun and villagers. They sing, drink and try to bite food hanging in the air. Instead of a mast, a tree grows from the boat, with a flag flying from it. Hieronymus Bosch painted this around 1505–15. It is now in the Louvre in Paris.

🦉 Fun Fact! An owl peeks out from the leaves of the tree that serves as the mast. In Bosch's paintings, owls are often thought to stand not for wisdom but for darkness, foolishness or evil. It seems to be secretly watching the boat.

【本文の訳】小さな船に、修道士や修道女、村人たちがぎゅうぎゅうに乗りこみ、歌ったり飲んだり、ぶら下げた食べ物にかぶりつこうとしたり。マストのかわりに木が生え、その上には旗がひるがえっています。ヒエロニムス・ボスが1505〜15年ごろに描いた作品で、今はパリのルーヴル美術館にあります。
